My younger brother's GF was diagnosed with leukemia a few weeks ago. Upon visiting her, I found Minneapolis Children's Hospital posted as banning guns.

I made my own decision on how to proceed based on a look around the neighborhood and a quick risk vs. rewards analysis. You can make your own decision, too.

I will point out that the neighborhood is dangerous there. I work next-door at Abbott, and leave my handgun in a lockbox chained under my seat when I go into the building, but I will not drive in for 11pm-7am shifts without my handgun on the seat next to me secured to some bungee cord on my backpack so it wouldn't get lost if I crashed or hit the brakes hard.

People have been robbed at gunpoint in Abbott's ramp within the past two years. Security will escort you to your car though. Have your nurse call them when you leave, and remember, concealed means concealed.

Goalie's analysis matches my own observations of that neighborhood.

Follow your best instincts.

I've spent a LOT of time at Minneapolis Children's over the past 10+ Years. (Daughter has cystic fibrosis). Going to and from that place I've seen everything from prostitution, drug dealing, public urination, you name it. A couple months ago someone was shot and killed on Chicago Avenue in broad daylight in the late afternoon. I drove by that spot not an hour before. That area of town makes me nervous.

Nice to know that the unarmed security guards at the complex are there to protect me.

I had a conversation with a security guard who works at Abbott. HIS words, were that if someone is found to be carrying on grounds, it is their policy to offer that person a lockbox to contain the weapon while that person is on the grounds. He stated that his boss had told them that people entering the hospital were often understress and did not have the option of running back to the car to secure a firearm before entering the building. And it was his opinion, that if they ran into a person who did in fact have a firearm, and was not willing to calmly disarm themselves when provided the opportunity, it was a matter for the Police not unarmed security. I told that security person I would carry everyday, I have seen him many times since and not once has he made any indication to me that he expected me to unarm. I carry every time i am there, twice a month.

The security guys and gals here are pretty good. They are not going to freak out, but only ask that you secure the weapon or leave. Same for the ED staff.
