Found this posting on the door of the creekside community center in Bloomington on the corner of Penn and 98th...

Image

"BY ORDER OF POLICE CHIEF JOHN LAUX, All persons (other than sworn MN peace officers) in possession of a firearm must immediately report to the police department and present a valid $624.714 permit and government issued photo ID.

GUNS ARE BANNED IN THESE PREMISES *
*When reserved for private use"

Obviously I didn't bother to go down to the police station to turn myself in for exercising the rights granted to me by the state...

Re: "Guns are banned...* When reserved for private use"

Isn't that up to the reserving private party to decide, would only be "enforceable" if the private party had an contractual agreement with the attendees (e.g. like an employment policy banning weapons at off site events)?

Maybe concede that yes, permit holders must display their permit & ID if requested by a police officer, but not a sign.

Invite him to post police officers by *all* of the doors to inquire of *all* people entering if they have a gun and if they have a permit.

Remind him that permit holders undergo extensive background checks and are statistically shown to be among the most law abiding citizens in the state.

Would this be the same Chief Laux, formerly of the Minneapolis Police Department, who famously said during his time there that Minneapolis didn't have a gang problem?

Answered my own question:

Police Chief John Laux
John Laux, former Minneapolis Police Chief, began his duties as Bloomington Police Chief in March 2003. Laux served 27 years with the Minneapolis Police Department, including six years as chief from 1989 through 1994. He was executive director of the Minnesota Peace Officer Standards and Training Board from 1995 to 1998. Laux describes leading Bloomington’s Police force as his “dream job.”

This reminds me of what I think was a North Mankato officer's collar candy - I could not identify it, other than it was about the size of two half-dollars next to each other. It might have been some sort of bird-thing (not an Army Colonel). Has anyone seen what I'm talking about?

An update of sorts and a request. Let's not flay the chief before we give him a chance to be prompt, professional, and Courteous which he has been to now.

I received two replies. One from Sandra Sorensen, the Admin Assistant, and one from Chief Laux. They were very different e-mails. Ms. Sorenson's has me a bit miffed.

Good morning, I have printed your email and attached photo and will get this info to the Chief. I am curious, I have checked my files for permit to purchase and did not find your name? I am able to locate a **** ******* with a ********* address, but am not sure that this is you. For my files, is the ********* person you, and do you have a permit to purchase or carry a firearm? Thanks for your help.

Ms. Sorensen,
Neither my residency nor my permit status has anything to do with the
issue at hand. The city of Bloomington is violating the State
Pre-emption laws and posting improperly. There should be no need for
any information on myself nor my status "for your files" as I have
done nothing but bring an oversight to your attention.

Chief Laux was much more professional.

Good Morning Mr. *******,
Thanks for you E-mail regarding the Community Center. Not being a lawyer, I will confer with legal staff from the City and let you know what we determine.
This is an important issue and I want to be sure we have it right

Thank you for your prompt, courteous, and professional response. I
look forward to the resolution of this issue.
