Project Appleseed What's up with these things? Worth $80 for 2 days of rifle marksmen training? Is the Revolutionary War Veterans Assoc a good group? |

$80.00 plus range fees and 100-200 dollars worth of ammo. Sounds like fun! This is the first I have heard of it also. The website looks legit, with lots of information. They do spend a fair amount of screen space defending their ideas and ideals. But then I suppose anything of this nature would. Thanks for the link. |

I've never been to one, but a friend went last year and is talking about going again this year. I know I'm going. The basic idea is to train people to be able to hit a man-sized target at 500 yards with iron sights. and from what I've heard they are pretty good at it. They are very pro 2a from what I know, and some of the reading i've done implies that they want to have a corp of people able to do what was commonplace in the 1700, shoot accuratly at long range with a rifle that is capable of hitting hard at that range. They teach how to sight in your rifle, adjust your stance, and breathe so that you can hit your targets. I have yet to hear anything bad about Appleseed, although I haven't done a search looking for bad things. |

I have no experience with Appleseed or the association behind it. I think their goal is laudable and the fee for a two day shooting clinic is reasonable. Here's the blog post that sprang to mind when you asked about them however: http://www.papadeltabravo.com/blog/?p=726 Of course, each course is led by different instructors so it'd be like saying Carry is bad because of a few Shady practices in a badly run class... Please report back on your experience. |

From what I've heard the Appleseed project is good, but the Winona range is "a dive", at least according to a couple people I know that have been there. Supposedly it's not a good venue for something like this. Can anyone confirm/disconfirm that? |

Some of the trapshooting points were a little tight to the parking lot IIRC. http://winonasportsmanclub.com/ClubPics.htm They have a nicer clubhouse than I have seen at many clubs. And the dues are really cheap. |

Wow, it looks nice in those pics. (Thanks Dean for the link.) A lot of rural shooting areas are completely cared for by volunteers and tend to look run down while still providing a place to shoot. The photos I saw there looks like a nice facility inside and out. (yes, I'm sure they are not going to show a garbage pile behind the clubhouse or old limber pile backstop on their website. Not that they have those. I'm just saying.) |

I don't know much about Appleseed, but I find it curious that there are folks who would rather drive hours to some far away range instead of finding a local club with a CMP (Civilian Marksmanship Program) program. CMP affiliated gun clubs in MN The First Shot CMP online magazine |

I don't really know much about the CMP other than you can buy rifles from them, somehow. Do they offer training sessions to teach you to be a better marksman? I saw they offered "clinics" but couldn't find out what they were exactly. I am not interested in a shooting league or competition. I would like to get properly trained on distance rifle shooting skills. |

A short article from the NRA about the CMP. The "clinic" is a class for beginning shooters who want to learn how to shoot and are interested in NRA Highpower rifle competition. I would say 80 to 90% of our participants are only interested in learning how to shoot a rifle. Here is a handout I wrote giving a brief overview of what I try to teach in the Post 435 Clinic. If your interested, we're having a club match at Post 435 next Tuesday night at 6 pm. Come by and see what we're about. |
