You may or may not remember that the Lake Phalen beating victim is a friend of my family. Tammy (the victim) attended a family function today and the following update is from my sister. (I was unable to attend).
Tammy had another round of reconstructive surgery on her hand (s) about 2 weeks ago. She has gained quite a bit of the mobility back that she lost from the attack. Her mood is positive and upbeat.
We (sis and I) have not pushed the self defense and handgun carry training which I offered her after the attack. Instead, waiting for the opportunity to present itself and then reminding her of it. Well the subject came up today in a roundabout manner and Sis said “well remember what Tom offered ……..no charge…..etc” She is ready mentally if not physically at this time.
I am hoping to at least do the classroom part and possibly (depending on mobility) some range work in Oct. Many of you offered to help out in the past …..If you still feel that way let me know. I don’t want to overpower her in a classroom setting but the range practice time after would be invaluable. I shamelessly ask for any donations that would help the cause……range help, range passes, ammunition, etc. I will be donating my time and range and classroom fees, if any, for the initial training as well as any further needs. Any help would be appreciated. More details as they develop.
Thanks

Of course, let me know how I can help, on the range or if she needs some ammo.
As several here will reply, just let us know.

I'll be available by email or phone for concealment tech support and any questions she'd rather ask another woman.

Tom
I would be glad to provide some boxes of ammo, hearing and eye protection, range fees or anything else that would encourage her to shoot enough to regain some confidence. Let me know what's needed.

Thanks everyone..........more info
Looks like mid Oct for an actual class for her and family group. She is still restricted to lifting 1 lb or less with her hands.
Hopefully in a month she will be ok to shoot ..........if not we will do it when she can.

This is asked w/ maximum respect for the privacy of the victim...and as an aside the story of Dru Sjodin was the catalyst for my purchase / training /carry of a firearm...
Is it remotely possible that upon complete recovery of the Lake Phalen victim she would find it helpful to herself to go public w/ the potential transformation from victim to fully-recovered-person-ready-to-defend-herself?
I'm visualizing a very powerful Oleg Volk poster.
Again I respect her privacy but there but for the grace of god goes...everyone we know.

anything is possible............she is a strong woman. Downside is she lives near the lake and if recognized by the perps they may retaliate against her and/or family. It took her this long to reach the decision to pursue the self defense route......the offer was made some time ago and brought to the forefront again by her.
Time will tell. It will be brought up but not pushed when the time is right.
Thanks

I set up a paypal fund(my account, but labeled special) to collect money to help arm and train Tammy.
Everything sent here will go to Tom, to help Tammy.

Tammy attended the breakfast last Sat and met the folks. Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome that you gave her. She is ready to start training but we will progress with the shooting portion slowly to ensure her hands can withstand the recoil etc.
Tammy will be attending class this week along with her children (while they are not eligible for permits I want to ensure they have the gun safety training). Oakdale Gun club is providing their classroom and range free of charge. All their training is of course also n/c
I have several instructors already to assist with the range portion.....so that is covered as well.
Thanks to all who have contributed so far ..........see next post for more

Incredible Generosity
Was at Bills south today and talked with a number of folks...........from the owner on down.
So here is the story:
Squib Joe had 2 donated range passes for Tammy, dropped off with him. Can't remember who from....sorry (but thanks) At any rate they had expiration dates and Joe suggested that he might be able to convert them to tokens with no expiration. So off he went to speak with the powers to be............leaving me to shop
He came back awhile later and said he was unable to convert them to tokens
<
<
<
<
<
<
Instead he handed me a set of paperwork giving Tammy a silver membership for 1 yr ....additionally it also included a free class as well as the opportunity to purchase a firearm at cost
I spoke a little later with Tom and John and expressed my gratitude.....I am just about speechless.......(ya right)
This is (IMO) above and beyond especially since it was given freely without being asked.
THANK YOU BILL'S
ETA: Those of you who frequent Bill's please thank them for this.........much appreciated

Jim, let's all try to be gracious, in all directions, on this, shall we? Like, say, now?
Bill's: that was a good, and nice, thing to do.

Businesses, like people, get some things right and others wrong. We comment on each in due course.
This was a good move on Bill's part and is much appreciated.
Thanks Ttousi for keeping this situation updated and to SquibJoe, and John Monson at Bill's for doing something positive for the victim in this case.
Paul

Hat’s off to Bill’s, and all the other generous folks. Their kindness gives me a warm fuzzy feeling.
