L.A. Sheriff to Ban Off-Duty Carry When Drinking: The sheriff of Los
Angeles County plans to prohibit his off-duty deputies from carrying
their guns while drinking because several have been accused in recent
years of firing weapons while intoxicated. Sheriff Lee Baca said there
has been a disturbing rise in alcohol-fueled misbehavior among his
deputies. Since 2004, more than a dozen deputies have been accused of
brandishing or shooting a gun while under the influence of alcohol. More
than 60 have been arrested this year on alcohol-related charges, most
for driving under the influence and most of them armed at the time. The
deputies' union opposes the restriction. Union leader Steve Remige said
it would let criminals know that deputies who had put them away would at
times be unarmed.

Either that or expect cops to act in a mature manner, whether on duty or off. Why should a good cop have to disarm if he wants to have a glass of wine with dinner?

Better to fire and lock up deputies that misbehave.

How can this be? The police are the experts and only they are qualified to carry guns because of their expertise, special training above that of the average citizen, and professionalism. +1 to what Andrew has stated, punish the offenders.

This can be done in Minnesota because the "authority [to carry]" under a "permit or otherwise [i.e., on your badge]" is lost upon a conviction under Minn. Stat. sec. 624.7142, WHOEVER the drunk is. And, with that authority, goes the job (most likely).

Four per year? That's worse odds than with 55,000+ Minnesotans.

Must be an isolated incident.

Ban cars, sex, cell phones, sharp objects and children where ANY alcohol is present. All of those are bad combinations.

Or just require people to behave responsibly or suffer the social and legal consequences of failing to act like grownups.

Or wherever stupid people are or wherever criminals are, or wherever children reside. Maybe if they took all of our cars away too people wouln't speed. It's for your own good!

Or you could just control yourself.

Alchohol, like a gun, takes on the traits of its user.

I often go to places where alcohol is present, but I do not drink it...ever. Does that mean my gun should be banned as well?

The link above should take you to todays headline story, Policing the air marshals, from USA Today about Federal Air Marshals-- I wonder what the stats would say if they could somehow compare the numbers of problems (drinking, disorderly conduct, etc.) with cops vs CCW holders-- Not to rag on cops but again you just can't seem to get away from the one bad apple theroy

So I shouldn't be able to carry in my house? Or at Target (3.2 wine coolers)? Burger King uses alcohol as a cleaning solution.
