I just want to make sure that I am understanding this correctly.

2008 Minnesota Statute 624.714

Subd. 9.Carrying pistols about one's premises or for purposes of repair, target practice.

A permit to carry is not required of a person:

(1) to keep or carry about the person's place of business, dwelling house, premises or on land possessed by the person a pistol;
(3) to carry a pistol between the person's dwelling house and place of business;

This is saying that in MY place of business I can conceal and carry for the purpose of protection and also to/from the home? I don't carry to work but I would like to carry from work since I park in a dark alley and leave work at 3 A.M.
I just don't want to oversimplify and get myself into a sticky situation with the law.

You're reading it right. To give it the most narrow, restrictive reading, you're on solid ground as long as you:

1) Own the business
2) Go directly to and from with no stops.

Oh, and it's just "carry," not "conceal and carry."

You're right and Andrew is right. Technically, it's legal without a permit.

Is a stop at the bank or for gas a straight direct trip? We know stopping at the bar isn't and boarding a plane to another state isn't but ... I'd rather be covered 24/7 than just to/from work. What if you end up taking a detour or needing to run an errand?

for the time and money investment, the permit is a win/win as a CYA measure. That, and you will learn about the laws in MN.

In all seriousness, get a permit but since it's lawful, be knowledgeable about the exception and act accordingly to defend yourself.
