Post subject:  Thanks everyone. And....

I would first like to thank everyone for their information about the topic. I know that 8 minutes is not much, but it is really helping her and now me. In my English class at Inver Hills Community College we have to write a a research paper about a debatable topic. Since, there is information here already I figured this would be perfect. I am set up to talk with two people at IHCC that deal directly with gun rules on campus. By doing this I hope to get opinions, thoughts and reasons. Thanks again for all your thoughts, facts, and ideas.

I am not sure how current this is, but SCCC lists this as the campus leader:
Inver Hills Community College - Jon Nixon (nixo0009@metnet.edu)

Good for both of you! I just got done with a carry on campus presentation and open discussion today. My presentation was 2 1/2 hours and I was rushing. We only had one person against in attendance for the whole thing unfortunately, but we slid her from quite opposed to on-the-fence. This was the test run this semester. Next semester we're hoping to go big. You as a student can REALLY shift attitudes on campus.

Just be careful to avoid emotional statements as much as possible. They can be attention getters, but people see right through them just like we see right through theirs.

I am looking for a in depth explaination of the law around carrying on campuses. are there any other threads that i have been able to find? Base on what i have read here, "as a non-student i am allowed to carry on campus (i.e frat row) as long as i am not within the buildings of the campus." :?: anything that will help clarify will help.

Private or public colleges? In Minnesota or elsewhere?

If you're not a student, a fail-safe blanket policy is: You can carry anywhere on the U of M campus that is open to the public; if there's access control, it's not open to the public.

They may play a trespass card and ask you to leave. If they do, then you should leave, but you won't get in trouble with the law for carrying. They know that much.

As the Statutes are written, carry by way of a Permit is not prohibited within MNSCU buildings or the University of Minnesota and, as they are written, the U of M may not prohibit such carry on its grounds, and therefor may not refuse a Permit holder entry to any facility or event to which the general public is invited by citing his lawful carrying as the reason.
But they try. Oh do they try.

If you are not an employee or student at that college or university, private universities are just the same as other private property. Same rules apply as at the Mall of America.

Of you are not an employee or student of that college or university, public universities are just the same as other public property. The U of M thinks it is "special" but, even it, does not have the power to create crimes. The same rules apply as at a public library.
