Crossposted from my blog...
Quote: I get a monthly report from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety on the number of permit holders in the state. This month, the number is 56,975. That's an increase of 921 from last month, and a new high. Shortly after posting the new stats on madfi.org, I got this anonymous instant message: Quote: If there is 507000 carry permit holders then almost half of those are owned by job related carry holders such as dunbar and garda. I assume that the person was trying, in a semi-literate way, to say that half of the almost 57,000 permits are issued to security guards. Not really. Prior to the shall-issue law, there were about 12,000 carry permits in the state, a large number of which were probably security guards in the metro. But even if every one of them were, then that 12,000 would only represent 20% of the current permits. So, no, anonymous correspondent, the vast majority of those permits are law-abiding citizens interested in personal protection and exercising their civil rights. But thanks for writing.

That's great! My thought is that January will show an increase then the rate will slow as the new Obama-provoked permit holders turn in their paperwork.

You can expect the line to go up pretty fast again starting this summer as there will be no one "not renewing" for another year.

i had not seen this graph until a short time ago. it surprises me that when i got mine back in october '03 so i would have been in that first 12,000 or so and here we are 5 years later and there are only 57K permits issued.
when this passed all i heard from co-workers was that everyone and their brother would be carrying in just a couple of years. That there would be 100K or more guns being carried and it would be wild west times again.
I guess this proves that people are taking the right to carry seriously and actually thinking about it and getting appropriate training before getting a permit.

Most gun owners are hunters and don't feel a need to carry. And with possible lawsuits, lawyer cost, the training, permit cost etc, most don't think it's worth it
Most are concerned with home protection instead and keep a gun for that purpose

My wife is looking at getting hers this summer. And there are a few co-workers who have looking into taking Joel's class soon.

So much for the line we've been hearing that a lot of carry permit holders weren't renewing their permits.

If you watch the trend line on the graph, there are a signifigant number of initial permit holders who didn't renew. enough that they offset the std new permit holders for 3 or more months.
Now we're past their hurdle. I expect some renewals to decide it's not worth it for them any more but I think we've seen the early adopters who decided not to sink another ~$200 into something they don't do much anyway.

OTOH, there should be an effect in the 5-year shadow of the "interregnum". No old permits will be expiring, but there will be new ones issued. Expect the slope to inflect upwards.
Also looking at the graph, bear in mind that the first 12 months had about 1000 permits per month from the old law expire.
