Post subject:  Permission to carry at a school

Two things regarding carrying at a school.

1. I am looking for a sample letter of permission to carry at a school if anyone has one. If not what are good things to include in it?

2. Also, the law just states that you "need to have written permission." But practically speeking, what does that mean for me (ie: in a law enforcement encounter)? Do I need to have the written permission on my person? The original? A copy? Is a digital copy on my phone/PDA okay?

IANAL but I would think anything at all would be fine unless you think the administrator who signed it is likely to repudiate it, in which case you'll wish you had a notarized copy.

Remembering that I'm not a lawyer:

1. Just that you have permission to carry firearms (keep it as general as possible) in and around [X] school. Period. The shorter, the better. Just to make things clear, it should be on official-looking letterhead, and it should be signed.

2. I'd throw the original in my fire box, and put a copy in my glove compartment, and leave it at that. Realistically, it's only an issue if a: you're made, b: somebody complains, and c: some cop doesn't know the law. So I'd toss a copy of Minn. Stat. 624.714 in, as well, as well as a good attorney's card.

I had my kids' principal write on the back of her business card that "DeanC has my permission to carry his pistol on school grounds. Signed Mrs. Principal" or something like that. I keep it in my wallet next to my permit.

I'd keep a photocopy of both sides of that card at home, as Joel suggested above. Just in case...

I need to get cajones to ask our principal for permission. Should he deny it, the request should remain confidential I would hope, but if not I don't want to have to live with the "gun nut" label. We still have over 7 more years to go at that school. I've already had to talk to him about making sure my son didn't a certain liberal, anti-gun teacher there (who told my daughter that the only reason to have a handgun was to kill people) so he knows I'm fond of firearms anyway.

Those of you who have asked for and received permission, what sort of angle did you take? I'm thinking I'd frame the request as, "I have a permit and usually carry. Without your permission to carry in school, I have to leave my gun in my vehicle, and therefore out of my control. Would you prefer that or would you prefer that I keep in under my direction control?". I'd phrase it better than that though.

I haven't had to worry about this from a couple angles
1) our daycare is unlicensed
2) she knows and is OK with it including a nice letter just in case
3) our local Church has a school attached and the Priest in charge would NEVER sign such a letter so I haven't blown my gun nut cover

The suggestions I've heard that make sense are:
1) Be involved BEFORE making your request. Be visibly involved in the school or organization. Be a steady, productive member of the group you're asking the principal to help you so you want to be a net gain for him or her and you want the gun permit to be a "no big deal" type thing
2) carefully think out how you're going to approach it. Have your ducks in a row. and Facts / details / Arguments prepared. Focus on It's no big deal.
3) I think your "I'd rather have it in my control than in a car where it could be smash and grabbed" is a good approach.

It is really nice to know the answer to the question before you ask it. That is how I approached the question.

At the time of that outrage that occurred up in Red Lake I went in and introduced myself to our then new superintendent (I used to substitute teach in the district.) I made the suggestion that he could improve security on the spot by establishing a district policy that the issue of guns carried by permit holders were of no interest to the administration. Essentially with the stroke of his pencil. I explained in detail.

You will recollect that the police in that rural area arrived in 4 minutes or so and the death toll was up to 7 on site when they got there and the shooter immediately after. Casualties included a guard, who was unarmed, a teacher and several students plus others wounded, and two dead off site.

Security down here continued to be a pretty young woman, sitting at a card table asking you why you were there, etc…. And lock down and get under the desks and so on.

The education system is failing us in many ways, not just this one. I wouldn’t hold my breath about getting ‘permission’ from the people in charge.

FYI.

How did the superintendent respond to your suggestion?

Like any other liberal politician. He thanked me for coming to see him etc....

I use a licensed daycare and let the provider walk into the question. We were talking while I was picking up the kids, and she eluded to gun control with certain politicians. I took the oportunity and asked how she felt about permit holders. Let me just say that I was surprised when I found out my provider who had been in the business for 30+ years was a permit holder and informed me that she felt sorry for the first sob that walked through the door without an invite. I quickly asked for permission and she said she didn't care, she had several parents that carry. 8)

Just curious, did you get written permission as required?

No, the daycare provider said don't worry, if anyone says anything I will tell them I approved it. I know, conversations are forgotten, but she has never said she would do something and not follow through. I should probably type something up just to CYA... anyone have a form letter?

I believe someone else has the brief

Jim Bob has my permission to Carry a Pistol on a Permit on these Premises

signed and dated.

From the sample letter for state capitol carry:
Quote:
As a citizen involved in the legislative process, I frequently visit buildings within the capitol area. As the holder of a Minnesota State Permit to Carry a Handgun, it is likely that when I do so, I will have my pistol in my possession.

you could probably work up something nice:

Quote:
As The Parent of a child in my care and the holder of a Minnesota State Permit to Carry a Handgun, Jim Bob has my permission as necessary under MN Law to have his pistol on my premises
