Northside Day at the Capitol -- Feb. 16, 2009

Please join Citizens for a Safer Minnesota, PROTECT Minnesota, and allies from North Minneapolis in the 2nd annual Day at the Capitol!

We will advocate gun violence prevention as part of a Northside Coalition day on public health and safety, economic development, and felon re-integration.

Please join us to speak to your legislators! The gun violence issues will be closing the gun show loophole and stopping the "Shoot First" bill.

SCHEDULE: February 16, 2009

9:45 am we will rally at the state capitol

11:00 am we will begin our meetings with legislators

Pre-register for this exciting day by sending your name, address, and telephone number to: csm@endgunviolence.com OR give us a call at (651) 645-3271.

Please let us know if you can come to the 9:45 am rally, or an appointment with a legislator, or both. We will make appointments for you to meet your legislators, and attend them with you.

If you can't attend but want to help, please donate here - Donate

What's good for the Northside is good for the state! See you on February 16th!

Nice touch, that just happens to be Presidents Day

How many do you think will join Heather Martens and the crew of hand wringers? I don't remember what they had for attendance last year.

Would a counter rally make any sense? Might be able to get a few folks out given some 57K permit holders. Invite some of the legislators from our side to join us. Possibly convince Mitch Berg and/or Jason Lewis to do a radio plug for our part.

I need to send my notice of carry to the State Capitol folks!

We can stage a rally any time we want or need to; not an issue. The history is that when we show up in opposition to them, we always outnumber them, even though, by and large, our people have to take time away from real jobs, and many -- most? -- of theirs don't.

But . . .

It would be a bad idea to let Heather's astroturf group drive our schedule.

She's obviously trying to piggyback on another group; the "Northside Coalition." That's okay, but it might be worthwhile to point that out to the legislators.

If we're going to ask working men and women to take a day off from work and Do Stuff at the Capitol -- and we do, from time to time -- we really do need to be careful not to do it too often. We had a huge success in packing the place around the "Stand Your Ground" bill; that shot down (so to speak) Heather's Backdoor Gun Registration bill.

So, my take is that we're going to have to do something this session, but let's not go to the well quite yet.

Discussion, please? Anything sensitive can be taken to Strategy, but one of the strengths that we've got is that we can discuss almost everything publicly.

I don't think we should care about the dozen whiney mommies having a picnic. We need(IMHO) to save it for when it matters. Personally, I have a limited number of days I can spend at the Capitol. I'd rather do it when it matters-when the legislators will see it.

I couldn't care less about showing up the whiney mommies just for the sake of showing them up. I do, however, care a lot about our side bringing 100 folks to sit in on a hearing that they can only muster 5 or 6 people for. That gives me a warm fuzzy feeling.

Yup. And we're going to need to do that again when they try to -- and please use this phrasing -- "pass Heather Martens' sneaky, backdoor gun registration bill." Even the Fudds won't like that.

The Legislature must meet at least 2 times a week. They meet on Mondays and Thursdays until things heat up in late March. Then they meet on other days as well.

Thanks for your input Joel. I appreciate what your saying about the timing of going to the well, and time away from work can be a hassle. I also have the sense that we'll need to do something in the not to distant future given the current political winds.

Shouldn't that be "Anti-gunners trickle into capitol"?

Hey, it's a day off for me. If there's a benefit in being there, I'll go. Maybe Heather wants a rematch of our debate? :)

Actually, there should be somebody there -- maybe she'll bring her kid, again, and we can tweak her nose about it. Again.

Here she is, with the usual charming expression on her face. As I understand it, she uses sour lemon-flavored toothpaste.

I was thinking the expression is of one in desperate need of some prunes. :D

Heck, if the timing works out, I could bring my 4yo to counter the kid. I'll see a kid and raise a kid if the 6yo doesn't have school that day.
