That's not a loophole, that's a deliberate policy of allowing faculty, staff and students to defend themselves.

At least, that's how I would choose to interpret it.

OTOH, loopholes in employer policy don't matter much in an "at-will" employment state.

No, there's no loophole. only a) cops and b) visitors with permits can carry without violating that policy.

I gather, then, that this is a public university, where it is illegal to ban carry by visitors.

This policy does not apply to the possession and/or use of disabling chemical sprays when used for self defense. (Training in the use of defensive sprays is strongly encouraged. Vendors should be able to provide this training and Material Safety Data Sheets.)

I'm kinda reading this as telling you a gas mask and a tank of chlorine gas is okay...

Private Institution. Why did you have to rain on my parade? I was so hoping that they messed up when they wrote the policy.

Then I'm impressed that they carved out an exception for visitors. They didn't need to.

By the way, the wording appears to be very slightly modified from a template used by many public universities, including the MNSCU system.

I think you may have just answered your own conundrum- my guess is that they copied their policy directly from MNSCU's or a similar one, and didn't realize they had the power to further restrict carry on their campus.

Let's not tell them...

Well you can find a different institution, or ignore the policy and suffer whatever sort of repercussions or benefits that may bring.
