...which he chose due to being the cheapest he could find ($65, I think). He called me up after the class, and excitedly told me about this really great ammo that his instructor swears by, called Extreme Shock (I'm not making this up). Turns out, the douchebag instructor was carrying a G30 loaded with Extreme Shock Fangface Anti-Terrorist rounds, and forced everyone to sit through a ten minute video presentation....during which lots of melons were shot, and a 500 lb wild boar was stopped dead in it's tracks by a single 9mm Extreme Shock round.

I was driving at the time, and was laughing so hard at his story, I almost sideswiped the guy next to me. But, all humor aside, can a NRA instructor really get away with this sort of thing?

That's good old-fashioned hilarious. Especially considering ammunition prices.

Of course 9mm is my favorite for shooting. And to be fair, as insufferably stupid as their ads are, from a practical standpoint Extreme Shock really isn't that much worse than a lot of what's out there.

Still, I don't think I could carry a box to the register with a straight face either.

As long as we're at it, what's your 9mm ammo of choice? Furthermore .40, .44 etc., whatever you shoot.

Gold Dot. I get it from Streicher's in 50 round boxes.

Yup. It's a shady practice, sure, but it's not unlawful; just distasteful. Wasting ten minutes of class time pimping a product? That's not a crime.

No, I'm not justifying it.

Sure, it's not against any law, but if it's an NRA class, might it be against NRA guidelines?

Probably not, but even if so . . . it's not an NRA class, though; that instructor, like many (including some very good ones -- Paul, Andrew, and Cobb, say, among others) teaches non-NRA classes frequently, and uses his NRA credentials as a merit badge to demonstrate some cred. (I'm not criticizing that practice, per se, since I flaunt my own merit badges shamelessly, and think I do a good job, too.)

Heck, I'm not even going to criticize making a product recommendation or two, in and of itself.

I like the Federal Hi Shok 115 gr +p+ for my 9mms; cheap, reliable, and you should see what it does to a melon!

From what I've read, I'm of the opinion that the Federal EFMJ is an awfully good choice.

True....but it's probably not every day that you find yourself defending your life with a can of floor polish, and figure out the hard way that it doesn't actually do what it says it does on the box :-)
