The hubby and I are taking are permit to carry class tomorrow, and I was wondering how the range test works. Is it a timed test, if so, how many rounds do you shoot in that time, and what is the time limit? At what distances are the targets? He got the info a few months ago, but he has forgotten, so, I've come to you!

Thank you!

It varies from instructor to instructor. I wouldn't worry about it.

As Dean said....

I agree. Since all instructors do things a little different, there's one thing they all do........and that is to explain range & shooting proceedures and what's expected of them. Don't worry about it and don't be afraid to ask questions about your class.

When I took my P2C class, the range time consisted of the following:

Fired a total of 30 rounds. We were required to bring along 50 rounds, but it was explained that sometimes a student is so nervous, they can't 'shoot straight'. That's what the 'extra' rounds were for (per my instructor), when I took my class.

Each 'set' was 5 rounds per magazine (or reload revolver with 5 rounds).

The goal was to shoot 5 rounds, reload and fire 5 more........do this a total of 3 times at distances listed below. The instructor 'watched' 2 shooters at once. First shooter would fire 10 rounds (two 5 round mags), at one distance. While reloading magazines, the instructor would watch the second shooter.

Move target to the next distance & repeat.

Target distances were as follows:
7 feet, 15 feet and 21 feet (if I remember correctly).

The only real difficult part of the test is the reload while summersaulting. Coming out of your tuck, while inserting the magazine and then sticking the landing can be problematic.

Best of luck....don't forget the knee pads.

I'm gonna love this site!

No knee pads for me, only crutches! I signed up for the class in April, broke my ankle in May, had to have some permanent pins put in it, and I'm still non-weight bearing. You should come and observe tomorrow. I'm sure I'd be quite the site trying to stick the landing. I may be a bit tough, but I'm not Kari Shrug!

Why worry, I hear the instructor is a real push over.
And Hunter07 pretty much explained the course of fire, nothing fancy, just need to demonstrate proficiency with your handgun.
You demonstrated more than enough proficiency in the NRA FIRST Steps class last Sunday, so you will shoot 100% in Saturday's Minnesota permit to carry class. 8)

And please take note of this -

Yeah, but he's kind of a psycho, he might be the opposite tomorrow.

Seriously, violating safety rules is the main way people fail. And people don't fail a lot, 'cause it mostly happens when their instructor has failed. And most instructors know what they're doing.

Gee Pat, I really don't even know how to respond to that.

I do know that ndtish will have zero problems on Saturday.

The instructor a pushover? Nah........ :? Well informed and trained to train others, yes. 8)

Cobb's class is pretty 'low key' and informal, but straight to the point without any BS.

I wish that I didn't have another obligation near Wabasha tomorrow, 'cuz I'd like to drop in after class to BS with Cobb for a bit (it's been a while since he and I last talked :? ).

Oh, if he asks for 'help' (an assistant/2nd body/guinea pig/human sacrifice :P ), to demonstrate a technique, get your hand in the air, jump up & down, yadda, yadda, yadda......... :D

That makes him remember you in the future. :P

Third time I shot a handgun was the day I passed my permit test, I did mine at Bills and it was challenging but anyone with some idea how to shoot would do fine.
