Some guys I know casually asked me about the permit law. (I'm kind of a gun nut, they would just ASSUME I had a permit because I actually lobbied one who is a member of the legislature, and I discussed the law with one who is a cop.) I told them I was taught to carry 24/7, and why. Of course they asked "Even now?" So I showed them. Eyes got big, (even the cop). He hadn't met a permit holder who actually carried. No further ramifications, but it might have been better to avoid the conversation. On the other hand, if I support 2A and the permit law so I don't want to be ashamed I carry.

I was actually asked that when I walked into a local auto body shop. The guy, which I did not recognize at the time, yelled out, "Hey Rick, are you packing?". I looked at him, pulled up my coat and did a 360 in front of him and everyone else in the body shop to see. Then I asked why he would ask such a stupid question. Turns out he was a former student, back in 2003 when he went through one of my first NRA classes that Minnesota recognized at the time. The pulling up of the coat and doing a 360 for everyone to see that I had no gun on my belt settled this very public situation quickly. Was I carrying, well yes I was, a Kahr PM9 in a pocket holster. I showed everyone what they wanted to see, I focused them on my belt line where they thought I would be carrying and showed them I wasn't,,,,,,,,carrying on my belt. Nothing wrong with a little white lie once in awhile.

I was out with friends, not too long ago, and one of them asked me if I had a gun with me. I just responded with "Why would I be carrying?" It was pretty entertaining, because the person had no idea how to respond.
On another occasion, I happened to be carrying my G17 under my coat, in an Aker horizontal shoulder rig...not the most concealable thing in the world, especially for a little guy like me. Anyway, my friend's drunken buddy bumped into the double mag carrier, his eyes got wide, and he asked what it was. When I explained that it was a cell phone holder, he looked relieved, and said "Man, for a minute there, I thought you had a GUN on you or something!"
I'm not afraid to tell people I carry, and OC now and then. I guess I don't have people around me who feel the need to ask me if I'm armed or not...it just seems odd.

I ask them if they locked their house when they went to bed last night. Even the brother in law has finally caught on that I'm always packing.

Depends on who's doin' the asking.
I often lift up my shirt on my non-gun side, show them my cell phone, and say something like, "Packin' the phone today." That usually settles it. No one has ever asked to see the other side of my belt.

Living in a very small town and the fact I took my permit to carry in that small town, I can assume 50% of the town knows I carry by now.... Seriously though, it depends on the person asking. People I know that know I have a carry permit have asked. Those that don't know I have a carry permit have never asked. Most of my employees know I carry. The ones that are anti-guns don't know. I carry my XD-9 in a Bluegrass hybrid and it pretty much disappears even when wearing a T-shirts and shorts. I know if I bend over too much the grip will print some, but other than that I don't worry about it. The bigger question people ask that know I carry is, "Is it loaded?". My answer is, "if it ain't loaded, it might as well be a brick". They don't ever ask that question again. I do care about not printing. I try not to. I really wouldn't want to scare my customers since we deal with a lot of elderly folks that really wouldn't understand why I carry. Derek

I have had a similar incident as Cobb. I am an instructor, and though in class I ask students not to "out" me , lots of others know I teach p2c. I usually reply "do I look like I'm carrying?" This usually shuts them up, and if possible I will take them aside privately and tell them to mtofb [or more politely as the situation warrants]

I generally use the same line we used when asked if we had nuclear weapons on the sub.
"I can neither confirm nor deny the presence of a gun on my person, I can confirm that I have the legal capability to carry a gun."
The classic non-answer answer.

I've even had family members say while out to eat in public (at the table) , "Have you got your gun on you?" in full voice. Do other people find this to be a problem and if so, how do you deal with it? This is a bit off topic, but PLEASE don't give GAMEWORKS your business... City Center is basically a bad location to be at if you're a permit holder. If you have some family members that need to be obnoxious about the permit maybe you should take the ahole approach: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2UVDAaF0NPE

Just grab your crotch and say, "Sure am!" And with Smartcarry your not lying My wife use to ask, "Are you carrying your gun?" I would always say, "Nope... I'm carrying two!" Now I get to task that question and sometimes she says the same line back to me.

I received my permit in January and only made the "mistake" a single time of telling anyone about it. That was my best friend who is a great guy and a very open soul. A person who is aware of a number of other quite personal things from my past and present. He unfortunately asked me in groups of mutual friends whether "I was packing?" I was not prepared for the question and, being unskilled at poker, unfortunately answered without a word He then asked me to "show the guys my cool gun"...I was able to silence that request more easily I was completely unprepared for the rapid devolution of the conversation into a spirited debate of "why do you need to do that" which ended up as a divide amoung the genders present. None of the women in this crowd are evidently comfortable with guns and my bride was rather pissed off to say the least at the condescending tone. Unfortunately, i was outed that day to that group but they seem to have "gotten over it". My friend's wife subsequently called me and personally asked me not to carry "that gun" in their home because she is "scared". I respect her and don't carry that gun (XDM-9). The S&W snubby is so much more concealable. My friend has apologized repeatedly for his wife's concern but he won't ask me anymore. He learned a lesson too. Now...the best part...I consider it a personal victory that, on a recent gathering with that group, one of the other guys pulls me discretely aside and showed me the very lovely blued revolver he was carrying. He said he decided after that day that "if I could do it...he could too". Not that I'm the reason but hey, whatever it takes. The lesson learned is that I never tell...I'm not so good at the obtuse answers but I'm getting better. Maybe I'll win at poker someday... Nah...ain't going to happenKeep those cool statements coming... ...DaddyBooks
