Hello,

If anyone has insight as to the quality of GAH Minnesota's MN carry training I'd appreciate hearing about it. I have a relative who lives nears where their classes are offered and is thinking of taking the training. I've briefed him on other quality instructors but this place is close and the class time works well so it is the first choice as long as the quality is good. Instructor names are Dwight Gahm and Tim Anda. Their web site is www.minnesotaconcealcarry.com

Feel free to PM me if you'd rather not post publicly. Or PM me for my e-mail address if you'd rather e-mail.

Thanks,
BB

I would consider reminding your relative that carry classes are once-every-five-years event that provide information that may mean the difference between freedom-and-solvency and life-in-prison-or-bankrupt. Given the stakes, there are more important considerations than proximity and whether breakfast is included.

While I'd be happy to have your relative in one of my classes in Chanhassen or Eden Prairie, there are many other excellent instructors inside an hour's drive of Nowthen.

PrinceWally's classroom, for example, is less than 45 minutes from there. He's my "competition," but I know he does a good job, and anyone who reads what he writes here can tell that he knows his stuff.

They advertise on the Northwoods sign with 'Conceal & Carry $100 MONTH-DATE" (or some such, I haven't paid attention to it in awhile) - also, every so often they give a free cert to the Bar to hand out to a winner of some game they do (Last one I heard was a poker game, winner, if able to get permit, would get certificate for free class - at least once they found a different gift for someone, I forget the reason)

The liquor store next door is owned by the Northwoods Bar & Grill owners, I've talked with at least one of the employees there. (She now guesses and asks me "how many today?" when I walk in the door)

Haven't stopped to try out the Bar & Grill yet though, other than a staged set of funny photos we bought some IBC Root Beer from them for.

EDIT: On my way home today, I'll see if they've got a sign up and if so, what the text is.

And why do people refer to it as a Conceal and carry permit? Because even people who are the instructors title it as such.
I myself don't know how well the general public would view the training class being held at a bar and grill. Can you see explaining to a non-gun person that the class at the bar is very good and prepares you for the carrying of a pistol? Maybe others don't see a problem with this but to me it just does not sound right.

A possible explanation, at least in this case when referring to the web site name, is that the vast majority of non-permit holders thinks of it as a 'concealed carry permit'. Correct or not, if you are not up to speed on the specifics of the law in MN you will probably start looking for training with those search terms. So, you could argue that they are marketing wisely to their target audience. I guess what really matters is what such an instructor organization actually conveys during their classes. If their students come out of class knowing that MN does not require concealment they probably have done their job (in this regard).

That's actually a pretty typical price, Jim. What are you "wow"ing about?

My Husband and myself attended a GAH Minnesota Class at Northwoods Bar & Grill in Nowthen. I bought the certificate at a Fund Raiser for a boy with cancer, it was one of the items on the Silent Auction. They presented everything that I had read in the two books Everythin you should know about carring in MN and Minnesota Permit to Carry Firearms Fundamentals. One fact, the Bar does not open until after the class ends, they only serve the free breakfast. We got the Class Instruction, Breakfast, the Range was covered, free guns to shoot from a group of 15-20 guns and my Husband took the Utah Class which was taught at the range, something about they both could not be taught at one time, Even a different instructor. They did fingerprints and photos and totally put everything in an envelope that they mailed to Utah. We were very satisfied and came away feeling positive that we were taught more than just basics. The best thing was when I told them my Husband was the shooter and myself the novice, they had one on one instruction and walked me through four different guns to let me have knowledge when I went to purchase what would be my carry gun. I would give them the five star rating, and my Husband went on and on that this is far superior to the class he took five years ago, no comparison.

The building where the classes are held is actually a bar, restaurant, and event center/banquet hall. Originally it was the Nowthen Cafe, then Sparkys Cafe, then Backroads restaurant & Event Center. The Northwoods Bar & Grill is either another tenant in the building, or there has been another change of ownership. GAH has done classes at the Banquet Center for a number of years. As far as a venue goes it's a newer building, a very nice place. I know that they assemble for their class generally about 7AM on a Saturday morning, that may be why they include a buffet breakfast.
