I don't know if this on topic of carry issues but I'd thought I'd post it here anyway.
I went to a Wells Fargo today here in Downtown Minneapolis and as usual there was a Minneapolis police officer sitting there looking really bored.

I didn't think about it at first because everytime I visit there is always a cop on duty. I might add the bank is not located in a bad area of town. There are no LEO's when I visit the Cottage Grove branch.

I have also noticed Minneapolis PO's in a liquor store "on guard" near the college campus. Hardly a bad neighborhood.

What's the deal? Does Wells Fargo or Liquor Depot pay the city of Minneapolis for it's services or do the taxpayers? :?:

I thought there was a shortage of Minneapolis LEO's? Is this the Mpls. Chief's plan to solve crime here?

I can think of a few neighborhoods who could use that very bored cop sitting protecting "Federally Insured Money".

I may have to make some calls.

These LEOs could be working extra hours, being paid for by those places. Or, they are just central locations. Maybe they have spots where the chief's say stand here.

With the downtown banks, it seems that robbers can get away fairly easily. The crowds in the skyways, all the access to parking ramps, the street.

As for the liquor store, is it the only one in that area? Probably just trying to scare under-agers.

As for a shortage of cops... I'm going to say that there is a shortage for the areas other than downtown. Ever been drinking downtown and seen an incident? A minimum of 10 cops pounce on someone. Driving downtown, I've seen cop cars with their lights on on like every other block.

The businesses pay to have the cops there. Depending on the department, it is either:

1) Business pays PD, PD pays cop overtime, PD makes some extra money, cop makes some extra money, everyone is happy.

2) PD allows cops to work directly for business. PD figures that cop's overhead is already met, and more visible cops is always good for crime control. Everyone is happy.

The one thing I know for sure is that the cops are NOT guarding businesses on tax dollars.

[EDIT: It's number two: see this page: http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/mpdpoli ... /3-800.asp)

I for one do not feel any safer going into a bank that has an off duty PD working. The banks I was in last year (as an armored car employee), all the PD were sitting at a desk reading the paper. Most did not even watch the clients as they walked into the bank. Seemed to me they were just sitting in the bank as a show of force.

Any hard time bad guys would more then likely just shoot the officer to get the attention of the other bank employees.

I preferr the banks that have no PD, and all the bank employees look up at every client that walks thru the doors. Most employees do a better job IMHO watching for 'funny people'.
