so the way i understand it is mn honors a ut permit, a ut permit is cheaper, ut permit renewal is cheaper. so my question is If I only wanted to carry in mn why wouldnt i just get a utah permit only?

Well, you can count on the Minnesota permit being good in Minnesota; the Utah permit is accepted (or not) at the unfettered discretion of the Commissioner of Public Safety. You can also count on MN LEO types to usually recognized that the MN permit works in MN; you can't count on that for the UT one.

Beyond that, as an activist, I really like to see the numbers of MN carry permits go up -- and that only happens if, well, people get MN carry permits; the UT permit doesn't increase our numbers, and our political clout.

But it's certainly your call.

In addition to Joel's commentary, keep in mind that if you carry under the authority of the Utah Permit, there is no obligation on the part of Utah or Minnesota to notify you if they "change their minds". I.e., you could be unaware that Minnesota has stopped honoring Utah and that could have, hmm, negative consequences if you are carrying on that Permit.

It is a good permit (Utah) to have for its extended coverage, but most folks would note that it is not your best option if you are a MN resident to try to carry solely on the UT permit while in Minnesota.

As Joel usually is better with words than the rest of us which may make some miss the point, I will take the step to be blunt. If you live here, get a MN permit.

If the 50 bucks is that much of a problem, ask a friend, take out a loan, check the pay phone coin return, but do what it takes to get the MN permit. It bothers me that a state resident would get an out of state permit, but not the home state permit when one is available, particularly after all the work by many people to insure that most of us are able to obtain a permit to carry at all.

But, hey, that is just me.

I agree with Joel that we need to get our numbers up. If you live here, there is no good excuse for not getting a MN permit.

Good for you. I hope it gets to you soon.

What are the chances that we'll see better reciprocity for the MN permit anytime in the near future? Right now it kinda sucks.

We need some activists who don't have a pecuniary interest in preserving the current system of out of state permit instruction to actually work on it.

Just as an historical artifact: the activists who worked hardest on getting the reciprocity problem straightened out all had a pecuniary interest in preserving the current system, and have gone to much effort working against said pecuniary interest.

Those activists without said interests who wish to put their shoulders to the wheel at all, or with more vigor, are cordially invited to do so.

Reaver, his original post was made in Nov 2006.

For a MN resident who just gets a Utah permit and not a MN permit, keep in mind that if something like this were to pass in Utah, you would suddenly have a premit that might be invalid in MN.

Has it really been 2½ years now?

To add more color, and I think this can be borne out by the original context of the thread, I think I was referring to those people who in almost cases recommended only getting the UT permit and market their instruction that way. But, it's been almost 2½ years so my memory is not that good. At any rate, that's where I am standing now.
