I can not imagine a circumstance where I would allow this to happen, but...it still goes down as my worst nightmare scenario-

A 3-year-old boy from Nerstrand, Minn., died Tuesday after being accidentally shot in the head by his 6-year-old sister, who was playing with a handgun, according to the Rice County Sheriff's Office.

Tragic and very preventable. A cheap lock box would have saved a lot of sorrow. :(

The only gun that you have control over is the one on your hip. Once you put it down it is no longer under your control.

If one wants to keep a gun in a state of readiness AND there are small children about the house, the state of readiness is at your hip and all other firearms should be safeguarded against curious hands and theft. My opinion.

Nothing that a $20 lockbox couldn't have prevented.... Sad and traumatic for the little girl...she's got a long road ahead of her for a 6 year old living with a burden like this...hopefully she'll get the help she is going to need to deal with this at that tender age.

Well said, Lance.

I'm putting this in my Power Point for Class on Saturday.
It's a tragic example to point out the law on leaving loaded firearms accessible to minors.

While lock boxes are good and should be used, training would have been a better way to prevent this kind of tragic negligent. Gunproof your kids, not Kidproof your guns.

Good starting points:

Gun-Proof Your Children

I agree! I got my first gun when my oldest was 8 and my youngest was 3. I ordered the home packet of Eddie Eagle supplies and taught them how to respect the gun. I took them shooting with me and let them both see how much damage the bullet did to a watermelon. They both got to feel how bad the kick was on my new .44 special.

My oldest was put into the Junior NRA as soon as she was eligible. At 13, she is a Junior NRA "Master sharpshooter".

Neither one would TOUCH my guns if they were left in front of their face all day while I was at work unless I give them permission! They are very well versed in "Stop...don't touch...leave the area...tell an adult". They would call me to let me know it was out. If they had friends coming over, I would probably have my oldest take it and put it in my lockable desk drawer. (I came from a state that wasn't such a nanny state and use to be able to leave my bedside gun out) :)

DISCLAIMER...I haven't done this. My carry gun is with me, everything else is locked up.

It wasn't that much when I ordered it. It's a $4.50 book. The gunproofing part is only about 20 pages.

If you want it, you can borrow my copy.
