Well, I'd bet the Luftwaffe ordered these fine guns as a "survival gun" for pilots, sort of because, they could get away with it, instead of military necessity. Send them home with lucky officers, so they can "practice". In Germany, it was common for officers to hunt as part of a social invitations.

My uncle who was a B17 gunner had boxes and boxes of shotgun shells so he could "practice". It was hard to get shells during the war, unless you were an airforce gunner. I guess arial gunner was similar to trap shooting. Grandpa, who didn't hunt, had a lot of boxes of shells in his basement for years. I shot up the last of them. Things are the same all over. (Not everything.)

As I understand it, trap or skeet (not sure which, but probably trap) shooting was an early part of the training for bomber gunners because it taught newbies how to lead a target.

I believe it was skeet. Robert Stack (the actor) served as an aerial gunnery instructor and had been a national skeet champion before the war.

Leaving aside the right or wrongness of confiscation of stuff from either live or dead Nazis is anyone going? If so any interest in carpooling?
