I found this article on another forum. It's too long to post here, but if you have several minutes...

Apparently the guy on the magazine cover is the other forum's source for the link

here's the first bit.

They Carry Guns

They Carry Guns
By Rosa Jurjevics | Published Wednesday, July 15, 2009

It’s a beautiful day in Pacific Beach as Nate approaches the bronze pelican statue on the boardwalk. He’s slight and blond, spectacled and clad in jeans and an army-green T-shirt. He squints. The sun’s so bright overhead that he is prompted to spray a fine mist of sunblock over his fair skin to stave off a burn.

I’ve never met Nate before, but I know it’s him (a) because I’ve seen his picture and (b) due to the handgun that sits on a holster against his hip. I’m about to get up from where I’m sitting and introduce myself when someone else beats me to the punch. A scraggly-looking beachgoer, a man of indeterminable age because he is so weather-beaten, approaches.

“What’s that for, bro?” he asks, pointing in the direction of Nate’s gun, a Taurus Tracker .44 Magnum revolver.

Before Nate can answer, the man continues.

“There are surfers at the beach looking to party, and you show up with that? That’s not right. Love life! Be mellow!”...

I will shoot a .22-caliber CZ Kadet...

...The CZ is heavy in my hands and heavier still as I slide a full magazine inside and give it a firm tap with my hand. I position my hands, making sure my grip is not too weak and my thumbs are not too low. My finger slides over the trigger, pulls back.

Pow!

An explosion erupts, and the gun jerks back in my hands, shell ejecting onto the floor; it drops and I don’t see it.

Yeah, those 2.5-lb .22s sure kick a lot. :)

Seriously, nice article.

Does that look like badly written soft-core gun porn to anyone else? And when I say "badly" I mean laughably funny, as in an exercise a hack creative writing teacher would give a teenager. The teenager being told, inappropriately at one point, "You are a wonderful writer, Skippy, don't give up on your dream!!!"

I stand, watching as he removes the gun from my hip. I can hear the revolver’s wheel turning as he checks the chamber for bullets. Then he hands it back to me — the first time I’ve handled a real handgun — and I slide it, if somewhat amateurishly, into the holster.

Nate has a great blog where he posts about all of his encounters while open carrying:

http://caopencarry.blogspot.com/

It's definitely worth checking out for tips on how to interact with police when doing so.

Well, we're talking about CA, where they can open carry empty guns around, apparently. I guess they be illegal concealed and they be illegal loaded, but open and empty is all tree hugger apporved and what not. I don't envy them having to start an encounter with a reload . .. . but I guess you could make IDPA style drills where you have to drop your mag and reload before you get to start shooting & maybe get reasonably efficient at it. It isn't what I'd want to have to do, to be sure.

Hey all, this is Nate, owner of the Open Carry California! blog. I see you guys have a few questions so I will do my best to answer them.

For starters, OCing dry is a term used to mean OCing without any identifying material. This is recommended for everyone that OCs here in California to prevent excessive detainments and further LEO harassment.

As far as the laws sucking here... yes, they do. But, I and others are doing what we can, with what we have, where we are, to effect some measure of change here in this state. It is a long and frustrating road but it is a necessary one to travel since so many people before us were generally sheep.

If you guys have any more questions let me know, I will be watching this thread.

CARRY ON!
