As a general rule one can own and keep at home for sporting purposes:
rifles (other than semi-automatic)
shotguns (other than pump action or semi-automatic)
pistols of no greater than 38 cal
revolvers and other, not less than 4” 100mm barrel
semi-automatic, not less than 4.7”, 120 mm barrel
(one may also own pistols up to 45 cal for use in certain events such as IHMAS and Western Action matches)

Strict licensing and registration apply, finger printing ect, ect...

Self defense is not an acceptable reason to own firearms.

For more information you can visit www.police.vic.gov.au

Select “Our Services” and then “Firearms”

Yes our police have to check their firearm in at the end of the shift – and they still (in the State of Victoria) carry the S&W Mod 10, because our Madam Chief thinks that they do not yet need a 17 shot 9mm.
