I'm a newbie with handguns and have been shooting at an outdoor range since last June (and not since early December). I just got back from visiting a daughter in Plainfield, ILL.....10 miles N W of Joliet. I brought my handgun, some ammo, and inquired about range fees at a local inside gun range in Plainfield so I could take my daughter shooting. The 'fee' was $18.95/hr with a $6 deduction IF I purchased at LEAST $18 in ammo and targets from them. I also went to a gun show in Wheaton, Ill last Sunday and tried to buy some ammo. I was informed that I needed a F O I D card (Firearm Owner's Indentification Card) and that my Minn carry permit "didn't hold any water" for a purchase in Illinois. (Boy, I'm glad I got out of that state 30+ yrs ago!)
Now if I was a fool enough to go to the indoor range to shoot at over $20/hr, would the range be able to "sell" me ammo to shoot there, or are out of state people disallowed to shoot in Illinois? I'll have to check this out with a brother who still lives there. Oh, then there is a 7% tax on the range fee, ammo, and targets. O boy!!!

It's probably a good thing you didn't get caught with your handgun & ammo, even though Federal laws allow transportation of weapons, Illinois is rabidly anti-gun. At least in the Northern part. Maybe this question would get better answers from a place like "The high road.com" or AR15.com

you are extremely lucky you didn't get caught with a handgun and no FOID card in IL. if I remember right, its a felony.
never ever ever ever ever ever ever bring a gun to IL. Its not worth destroying your record.
Also check www.packing.org for info on where your permit is valid.

I may be wrong, but I think if you have a MN CCW, you fall under the "peacable journey" part of the IL code. This applies to traveling by air with a firearm also, if you're changing planes in IL.

We all know its no guns in Chicago and Morton Gove, IL. However, USPSA has had its Nationals at PASA outside Quincy, IL for the last two years attracting 100's of competitors and there has been no issue.
I've also attended shooting classes in Bloomington, IL and never gotten warnings from Ayoob. Perhaps there are competition or training exceptions, I never had to buy ammo.
I lived in IL over 10 years back , for 10 long years, and know about the stupid FOID card. I actually liked it better than MI's gun registration requirement!

Spendy.
The city of Willmar operates an indoor range, right in downtown. Cost: $1.50 per half-hour. It has 10 lanes, 60 feet, I believe, with electric target holders and a great ventilation system.
I wouldn't move to Illinois to claim a million-dollar lottery jackpot. (Well, maybe for that I would but I'd leave in a hurry.)

The typical fee here in AZ where I spend the winter is $8 for the whole day, targets are extra or you can bring your own.

Dakotah Range charges $9/per person (members) no time limit.
If you bring your own guns, ammo, targets, eyes and ears, that's all you need to spend. No limit on the number of guns per lane, either.
All in all, a pretty good way to spend an afternoon!
(Cheaper than across the parking lot over to the casino- which btw is posted )

Huh. Figuring in about $12 worth of gas, round trip, from my house, the total cost is about the same as going to Bill's.

At Bills (Robinsdale) and Armored Fire (Circle Pines) the fee is $20 per hour for one shooter and $30 per hour if two persons share a lane. If you are willing to invest $250, you can get the cost down to $12.50 per hour by purchasing 20 "tokens."
Burnsville Range is still a bargain at $10 with $5 more if you share the lane. For $100 per year, you can cut that fee in half. It's more than worth the gas to get there. They now have a rifle range too.
There is also a multi-million taxpayer-dollar Law Enforcement training center in Edina that has indoor ranges supposedly open to the public. Anyone have information on them?

The cost is $10 per lane per half-hour.
