Deer season is coming soon! I've already downloaded the 2006 regulations and am getting ready. I picked up a new .44 Super Redhawk since last deer season and have been shooting it since December. I put an Aimpoint red dot sight on it. I can shoot it a little better than my open sighted Redhawk. I think the main reason is the Super Redhawk has a better trigger. Has the internals of the GP100. The Redhawk has that unique single spring for both hammer and trigger. The rubber grip also cuts down the apparent recoil somewhat. Both 'Hawks have 7.5 inch barrels.

How about the rest of you guys that hunt deer with a handgun? Getting ready? Sometimes I think getting ready is as much fun as the actual hunt.

I'm going to bring my 8" Python with me this year for the first time. I'll still have my rifle with me just in case. I'm going to try taking the first doe that comes down the fenceline with it (I need some venison). I sighted in with 170 gr Buffalo Bore JHPs just a couple days ago. I think that load should be okay for a small deer.

Gotta get out with my .475 for a little practice. IDPA is kinda winding down for me, so I've got to dust off the revolvers for a little practice. :D

Pred, once you get that first deer with a handgun you'll be hooked! I used to bring along a rifle after I started handgun hunting but I never took it out of the case and now the rifles stay home.

Actually, hunting from an elevated stand with a handgun gives you more opportunity since it's easier to aim a handgun in almost any direction. If you are right handed using a rifle and a deer approaches from your right it's very hard to get your rifle on target, not like a deer from the left which is easy.

It's funny you should mention that about the right handed taking a right handed shot. The only real 'nice' buck I've shot was exactly in that position. He caught me off-guard as I was sitting on my wooden ladder stand. I had to turn while sitting down to get a shot all the while he was standing only 25 yards away. He didn't make a single sound and I didn't know he was that close till he stuck his head out of some brush.

I also bow hunt, so I know how exhilirating it can be to shoot something close.

Well I ran across a good deal this summer on a used revolver, so now I have the gun; a Freedom Arms Mdl. 83 in .454 Casull. But I've never been deer hunting before, so I'm a little leary of going off by myself....

Dont be leary - just do it but let people know where you will be hunting and when you are supposed to return.

Ironbear, if you've never hunted deer before, starting with a handgun like a .454 is a heck of a challenge. A good rule of thumb is to limit yourself to 50 yards or less. If you can keep all your shots in a paper plate at 50 yards that should be good enough for starters. If you can't, limit yourself to the distance that you can keep all your shots in that circle. Not good to lose a deer because of poor shooting.

Read some good books on MN deer hunting. Dr. Ken Nordberg writes some of the best. They are normally carried in paperback at Gander Mt. and other places. I learned a lot by reading his books and they are MN specific. Here is a link to a Nordberg website. http://drnordbergondeerhunting.com/hypertext/Bio.html
