Experience has shown the "best" all-around twist is a 1:8 or 1:9 twist on the AR's.

anything over the 69gr bullets really perform better with a 1:7 or 1:8 twist.

If you want that hot, speedy gonzales 45-55 gr bullet, you got quite the rig with a 1:12.

one problem with the corbon rounds that Dean C posted is the cost, Fudd is not going to spend 40 dollars for 20 rounds, when federal and Remington both have legal 110 grain soft nose for 17 bucks a box.

As far as fitting a daughter or small boy with a gun, there are LOTS of smaller rifles being sold today, Gander must have 30 or 40 of them on the shelf right now. Express Jr or youths are readily available at affordable prices too. The problem tends to be the poor choices in chambering for these rifles. a .243 from a 16 inch barrel is a blaster. same with a .308 or even 7mm-08. a far better choice to chamber these in would be 250 savage, 6.5 x55 or even 7x57. all three with modern loads are VERY mild in a light rifle, all are mild reports, and are far better at killing deer than .223's and .30 carbines.

Also if you hand load, you can make practice loads that the young shooter will think they are shooting a .22. By keeping the hunting loads away from the kid until they are actually in the tree stand. they will never fear the recoil and make a great shot. My son spent a year shooting bunnies and squirrels with his .250 savage loaded with 60 grain flat points from the 25-20 pistol round. When he finally fired a nosler 100 grainer at a deer, he never felt the gun go off.

Small tangent:

Well at least 700 Nitro Express is a legal cartridge; for those guys that prefer the deer to be gutted before it hits the ground...

Surprising that they even list some of those cartridges, but then I'm sure there are a couple guys in the state that use them just for kicks.

True, maybe the DNR could simplify by saying, "its legal to hunt with if it is larger in diameter than your fist, or if the recoil makes you cringe just thinking about it, or if the bullet is capable of total liquification of your target."

We hunt down in North Carolina where each county sets each Regulation instead of State wide "caliber regulations".
The farm land sets right on the North Carolina/South Carolina line with the main pasture having the state-line run right through the mid section!

South Carolina allows two deer per day, with five antlered max with five anterless for a total of ten deer.

Example:
North Carolina Hunting Regulations

Pistols
* During the open hunting season for rabbits, squirrels, opossums,
raccoons, furbearing animals and legal nongame animals and
birds, these species may be taken with a pistol of .22-caliber
with a barrel not less than 5.5 inches in length.
* A hunter or trapper lawfully taking wildlife by another method
may use a pistol to dispatch the animal or bird taken, except as
noted below.
* Pistols may not be carried during the bow-and-arrow and
muzzleloader deer hunting seasons.
* Deer, bear and wild boar may be taken with a handgun during the
established gun hunting season provided that the handgun is not
less than .24-caliber.Muzzleloading pistols are not legal for hunting.
* It is unlawful to hunt or take wild turkeys with pistols.
Rifles
* Rifles are prohibited by federal law in huntingm ratory game birds.
* Local laws prohibit or restrict rifles in some counties.
* It is unlawful to hunt or take wild turkeys with rifles.

Burke
* Hunt wild boar with any weapon other than a bow and arrow, a
rifle larger than .22-caliber or a shotgun loaded with buckshot
or rifled slugs.

Chowan
* To hunt with a centerfire rifle, unless the barrel of the rifle is at
least eight feet above ground level.

Hoke
* Take a deer with a rifle, except on Fort Bragg.
* Hunt with or discharge a firearm from, onto
* Hunt with or discharge a firearm from, onto or across a secondary
road without having in possession written permission of the
owner or lessee to hunt on abutting land.
* Hunt with a rifle larger than .22-caliber or capable of firing .22
center-fire, unless positioned at least 10 feet above the ground.

Scotland
* Hunt with the use of a center fire rifle or any firearm capable of
firing a center fire projectile, unless the person is positioned in a
stationary and elevated position at least 10 feet above the ground.

223Rem with 60grain Partition or 69grain Sierra HPBT have worked just fine for me over the past 24 years.
Harvesting 15-20 deer each year over that time without ever losing a deer
due to using a "mouse-gun" has left with me wondering more about these folks who lose deer with 270's and 30/30's.
You do your part and stay proficient with your chosen tool of choice.

Between every yutz that grabs their gun and heads north from the cities to blast away at the elusive 30-point buck from 500yards and still has powder burns on the hide afterwards, you'll always have poor shots who complain about the cartridge/rifle isn't powerful enough.

Just out of curiosity, whats the average weight of deer in NC? I friend I used to hunt with would hunt Louisiana and Texas with a .223 but after seeing the size of deer here he changed up to a .257 bob.

He called the deer he hunted German shepherds with antlers.
