one other point to add, I talked to Mr Opsahl about this and got this clarification,

If it is a legal pistol cartridge, it is therefore also a legal rifle cartridge.

This may not seem like a big deal, but someone I know was once issued a citation for using a .357 magnum in a marlin carbine. It was NOT on the rifle list, therefore the CO issued a ticket, that has since changed.

If the round is listed on the pistol list, it therefore becomes a legal rifle round.

Also note that 30 carbine is now a legal deer round, despite a lot of evidence to the lack of effectiveness on deer sized game.

Does that work both ways? If it is a legal rifle cartridge can it be shot from a pistol? In the slug zone?

This comes up all the time it seems. Big scoped pistols shooting .243 - .308 cartridges. (Stryker, TC, etc.)

I believe that you can .....i.e. 30.06 in a pistol........but, worth a phone call before you do it.

What about vice versa, Does this mean that one can use a marlin .357 carbine in the pistol/shotgun zone? And since there is a revolver manufactured in 45/70 does that mean I can use my Marllin guide gun south of US hwy10 now?

I would think it only applies up, that is pistol round in the rifles, I would think that if its a legal pistol then its legal in the Pistol only areas. strikers and whichitas and xp100's are not explicitly forbidden

Ahhh, since something like this
Image is a legal firearm in all zones and since a given cartridge it could fire, say the .30-30 or 7x30 Waters , is on the Legal Cartridge list, it is not prohibited in that combination.

I got this reply from the DNR:
Quote:
Kevin Kyle wrote:

Definitely not to the first; you can't use a rifle in the pistol/shotgun zone, no matter what it chambers. (You can, of course, use a handgun in the rifle zone.)

I'm not sure whether or not the restriction makes sense -- I think there's good arguments both ways -- but it doesn't have to make sense; it's just the law.

Thats a .277 dia bore hopefully It'll be a 6.8spc barrel soon. Custom made lower receiver(needs anodizing before I finish installing the parts).

No. The shotgun/pistol zone is a restriction on what you can shoot with; a legal hunting cartridge can be shot out of a pistol anywhere, but only out of a pistol in the pistol/shotgun zone.

Otherwise, somebody would -- just once -- build a pistol that can shoot any particular rifle round, and the restrictions on where one can shoot rifles would become meaningless.

What I find odd is that this caliber was added to the approved list just last year, or perhaps it was 2005. I just can't imagine that there was a big groundswell of popular support for adding this cartridge. I wonder what the impetus was.

As a side note, my dad fought in the Korean War. Since he was in an engineering battalion he was issued the M1 carbine. He said after the first time he used it in combat he "traded up" to the M1 Garand because the carbine just didn't have the stopping power.

If you ever want to read about one hellacious battle, read "East of Chosin" by Roy Applemam.

Sorry to stray off topic...
