That's changing with fewer farmers. Large farmers are often Republican, as are the real "Christian" areas.
"Farm welfare" is actually a model of bipartisonship efforts, but the pro-Dem bias remains. There are areas where over 90% are Dem or Rep, based on voting patterns.
But in rural districts, Republicans still gun against the ghost of Herbert Hoover. I think it's why rural states can elect liberal Senators.
At the local level, most pols, including the Dems, play the conservative angle.
