Who lives in House District 16A, 26A, 38A, and 41B?

Your Reps need to hear from you!

Voting records are fairly clear for everyone else in the committee. I guess we could add 57A in that list also.

Here is an updated list of who to contact, how they stand on this bill and their NRA grade.

I had a nice long conversation with Sandra Masin last week. She just needs some more convincing from her actual constituents.

Thank you for bringing this bill to my attention. It seems there is no rest for the vigilant among us.

I have sent letters to all of the representatives in that committee. I hope the bill dies there.

My Republican representative and senator (from a NW metro district) have been contacted and are staunchly against this bill. They understand the implications and mess it would bring.

There's DEFINITELY a lot of interest here, but in my case, I don't want my babbling to raise the noise floor.

I spoke with Drazkowski last night and as expected he will oppose the bill in committee.

We still need to call these 5 members and sway there votes. If you live in one of these communities, get on the horn.

If you live in any of these districts or know anyone who does, please hold your reps accountable or forward this message on to those who can.

I spoke with Rep. Paul Rosenthal (DFL 41B) about this last night at our hearing.

Me: "Rep. Rosenthal, good to finally meet you. I've left several messages and emails regarding House File 953 with your office. I'd love a chance to discuss this bill with you."

PR: "Yes, definitely. Did you get a time scheduled."

Me: "No, not yet. Your assistant said she would bring the messages to your attention."

PR: "Oh, I haven't seen them yet. What was this regarding?"

Me: "HF953 Paymar's bill regarding transfer of pistols. I believe you are a co-author of it."

PR: Startled look "I'm not familiar with that one. If I am a co-author, I shouldn't be."

Basically his comment threw me for such a loop I didn't know what to say. I'll follow up with his office today...

Bill was referred to Crime Victims/Criminal Records Division Committee -- which is chaired by another anti John Lesch -- this week and it gained a couple of authors.

Moved it to a slightly smaller committee which may be more innocuous sounding ...

8 members of the committee listed.

2 as co-authors and Debra Hilstrom was listed as a co-author prior, right?

That's fine. When we start calling, it's fewer calls to make.

Hilstrom's actually not a co-author yet -- which surprises me.

Authors are: Paymar ; Johnson ; Rosenthal ; Hayden ; Lesch ; Kelliher ; Ruud ; Lillie ; Mullery ; Bly ; Champion ; Slocum ; Hausman

Smaller committee where 4 of 8 members have NRA 'A' grades. And only 1 member, Kory Kath, doesn't have a voting record.

I suspect Hilstrom will not become a co-author ... make the other side count their votes and wonder. leaves her for the spoiler.

I sent an email this afternoon and got my first reply.

Quote:
Dear Jason,

Thank you for your comments and concerns about HF #953. This is an unwarranted restriction on our rights. It seriously erodes our second amendment rights by placing unreasonable restrictions on the transfer of firearms and it will shut down gun shows as we know them.

The bill will severely curtail legitimate trade in firearms by law-abiding citizens and adds fees to the permit to purchase applicant and the dealer. It eliminates the exemption for the transfer of antique firearms and sadly, it appears that it will make it illegal to give someone a weapon as a gift.

I will be opposing this bill and fight this ridiculous and unneeded legislation.

here's what I sent out personalized to each rep:
Quote:
Representative [insert name here],

I am writing today to urge you to oppose House File 953, which is scheduled to be heard by the House Crime Victims/Criminal Records Division Committee on Friday.

This bill was designed to not only regulate the sale of firearms at gun shows, but to regulate the sale of firearms between law-abiding persons, all across Minnesota. We already have 4 other laws covering the sale of firearms to prohibited people. We don't need another one. As a whole, HF 953 will only affect law-abiding gun owners, and in no way keeps guns out of the hands of criminals.

A particularly troublesome provision in HF 953 creates a de facto registration system by requiring records of all transfers to be maintained by the state. These records would be made available to all authorities, including for use in “civil” cases, which are often brought by anti-gun government officials and are designed to damage or interfere with lawful commerce in firearms.

HF 953 is a direct attack on Minnesota’s gun rights. It also changes the transferee permit from a free background check to an accounting nightmare of actual cost + $5. One need only look at the discrepancies in the BCA Carry Permit report to see how easily the citizens could be inconvenienced and how out of control a single sheriff could get in charging fees.

This bill is pure harassment of legitimate gun owners and their non-commercial disposition of their property because, as a 2008 empirical study by Uiversity of Maryland criminologists demonstrates , it will have NO EFFECT on homicides or suicides and provide NO REDUCTION in firearm-related deaths (or violent crime, for that matter). All it will do is impose unnecessary deprivation of liberty, hassle, delay, and cost on Minnesota’s 1.5 million legitimate gun owners.

I ask your assistance in opposing this bill in Committee.

Thank you,

Paul Bxxxxxx

In these times of huge budget shortfall, another point to mention in communications against this bill are the costs. Record keeping and other administration this bill would requires will cost money. New money.

The costs are what got the most traction with my DFL Senator last year and we weren't facing what we are this year.
