Quote: The proposed law would require all buyers of pistols or assault weapons to have a permit-to-purchase or pass a locally-conducted background check.
Currently, if you want to buy a pistol or assault weapon in Minnesota from a licensed dealer, you need a permit and background check. However, that's not the case if you buy from a private seller at places like gun shows, garage sales or on the Internet.
"It's a fairly gaping loophole that we have in our current law," said State Representative Michael Paymar. "It's a fairly simple process so we're trying to weed out dangerous people who should not be possessing those kinds of weapons."

Ker-ist. More crap from Paymar. Exactly how would he police this new law? Exactly how would criminals be compelled to follow it? Hope he farts soon, his heads so far up his a$s, there's no other way for him to get oxygen...

IF this passes, I'm going to make a point of doing more private purchases. I don't sell, but, I'll buy.
There, I said it. I'll be an outlaw!
yo, Paymar, catch me if you can! (one-fingered salute emoticon in this space)

I emailed the reporter asking why she didn't mention Minn. Stat. 609.66 subd. 1f.
Since it's already illegal to transfer a pistol to a criminal, without performing a background check, all this does is make it illegal to transfer to a non-criminal. In other words, it criminalizes benign behavior.

Exactly how would this be enforced? The last time I did a private sale was in my dining room. Would Paymar have a cop posted there?

I, unfortunately, live in his district. Little chance of that, unless another DFL'r challenges him from the left.

Please furnish us with the details of the response if they're in anyway assuming or patronizing. In my years I've ground a couple axes with crusader journalists both professionally and from the hearth.
If the correspondence is civil and the complaint worthy of at least a second glance, and they get flippant or dismissive (attitude: I've been a local reporter at this nickel and dime outfit for X years, plus I went to school for it at Nickels and Dimes University, therefore...), I've made it a point to forward their letter and a complaint in addition to my additional grievance to their higher-up.
I make sure to emphasize that I regularly receive my news from their organization, it is my outlet of choice, and that is the reason for my complaint. I point out that if I didn't take their reporting seriously (of course I do not but...) I would look elsewhere, so this misrepresentation has disturbed me greatly, and it has been compounded by the reporter's gross arrogance. I tell them that I wish to be able to continue my trust in their news, but considering the dismissive attitude of the staff, I've decided to publish this correspondence in my community newsletter as well as their [the higher-up's] response, or lack of it.
Write the letter straightforward, and without pretext or personal attestations to your character and sound genuinely concerned about the future of their news service: you're in love with their organization, and possibly their politics by association...you're almost certainly not some gun nut or conservative asshole. The mention of the letters' now-necessary publication, as you've determined, puts a gun to the higher-up's head a then they have to address the matter, at least in a band aid fashion.
The scope of the newsletter and its circulation they do not know, but won't call your bluff if the remedy is so simple, as long as your message is crafted businesslike-enough. Don't mention your affiliation with any organization, such as a law enforcement agency or political group, unless it is in fact common knowledge that you have an influential publication. Like it would be to your benefit to drop on them your "my weekly NRA brief/update, whatever" because they've heard of that and it rightly scares the shit out of them.
I've done this a few times when some media component either wasn't going to hold a lid on something they didn't know jack about, or curiously just couldn't quite manage to get the fucking facts straight. Try it, they'll jump.

Well, I'm all for that, but look at his district: the DFLer will be elected, even if just before the election he's filmed having sex with a flaming goat (of either gender). If you want Paymar out, the only way to do it would be some grassroots campaign to get a very liberal DFL challenger to attack him from the left. Which would be kinda hard; Lenin could barely manage to get to the left of Paymar.

Also, concerning Paymar, he's not much better outside the bill in question. He's a jerk's jerk.
EDIT: what he said (joelr). beat me to the punch I guess

This is sooo stupid.
My mother thinks this is a good idea, despite the fact that I told her that it's already illegal to sell to those who are disqualified under the law.
So, what's the point of this law then when what it aims to prevent (selling to criminals) is already illegal to begin with?
