Say I wanted to get a OWB holster, with the potential to carry OWB in public. I'm not sure I'm comfortable with my "stock" XD holster and no real retention. What type of holster would be reccomended?

It all depends on you, Cops use a level 3 retention holster to keep that sidearm in place even during multiplayer wrestling matches. Almost all of those are big bulky and difficult to draw from without a bit of practice.
I carry OWB and just use a slide type holster most of the time. this is a pic of Glaco holster, but my holster is just about the same Trying to pull it out takes some serious tugging, but I almost always keep it at least nominally concealed.
I want a holster that keeps the gun from falling out during strenuous work situations, i am not that concerned about having someone try to grab it.

For my carry guns and holster, I don't use a external retention device but only the boning of the leather to hold the gun tight. The Slide is the one I use most and I could do cart wheels with it.

If you want to open carry, I'd think about the Serpa CQC holsters from BlackHawk. They are durable, affordable, have adjustable cant, and offer some real retention without being difficult to use. For $45, you get the holster with both a belt slide and a paddle attachment (you can switch them with a screwdriver in just a few minutes).

I second the suggestion for the Blackhawk CQC if you want to OC. I use this one for my XD45 Tactical.
There is an audible click as the retention cam engages the trigger guard. I spent a few hours the first afternoon I had it, practicing drawing. The location of the release tab is very natural and leaves the finger setting alongside the frame after the draw.
I do believe it will keep the gun in the holster under most daily circumstances and would undoubtedly be better than an open top holster during active physical activities. Would it hold up to a determined thief yanking the pistol from your side when OC'ing? I doubt it. I think they would end up with the gun and holster as it pulled loose from the screws. It would take a mighty tug however.
Having said this, I find I carry IWB almost exclusively these days.

My daily carry is most often a G22 in a SafariLand 328 thumbreak pancake holster.

And for the really risk-conscious, BH now has the Serpa with level 3 retention:

Interesting...
I was thinking a level 1 most likely, about as far open carrying I'd intend to ever do would be more so stuff around the house, and out in the boat where I'm moving around a bunch and IBW isn't my favorite option in those cases.

Comp-Tac apparently just introduced a new OWB version of its M.T.A.C., which is leather on the back and kydex on the front. I haven't used one but Comp-Tac's stuff is usually of the highest quality. Retention on their other models is usually by the holster gripping the front of the trigger guard. Not sure if the same system applies when leather and kydex are combined.

This a holster thread ???
The bottom two are for occasions where I want to be 'dressed up', the first one I wear with casual clothes. No extra retention but then again I don't open carry very much and never in crowded areas.

For OWB, my current favorite is my Galco Concealable Belt Holster. I like the FBI cant, it holds the gun close and keeps the grip tight against the body.
Now I want something similar with snap loops instead of the slots.
