I looked for the original post. Couldn't find it.
There was a video to go with this somewhere...

Chicago Police Officer Convicted of Battery on Female Bartender Half His Size

Associated Press

Quote:
CHICAGO — A judge has found a suspended Chicago police officer guilty of aggravated battery in the videotaped beating of a bartender after she refused to serve him more drinks.

Anthony Abbate testified Tuesday that he threw, punched and kicked the woman who was half his size because he felt he was in danger.

He acknowledged he was drunk when the beating happened in February 2007. But he says Karolina Obrycka pushed him first as she tried to remove him from behind the bar.

Abbate faces from probation to up to five years in prison when he's sentenced June 23. Judge John Fleming denied a request to revoke his bond, and Abbate remains free.

The judge dismissed two official misconduct charges.

Hope he gets prison time; the beating was brutal.

Again, with so many good people trying to be cops for all the right reasons, why do they hire these guys?

It was killing me. I clearly remembered it. I finally dug it up: http://www.twincitiescarry.com/forum/vi ... php?t=7411

Joel brings it up in about the fourth comment.

Abbatte, by the way, pleaded self-defense. The judge, in the bench trial, didn't buy it.

He was acquitted on "official misconduct." Which might save his pension, alas.

Dean,

How in hell did you find that?

I looked (mistakenly) through the whole Isolated Incidents Sub-Forum

Dean's mind is better-indexed than just about anybody else's. (Better than mine, of course, but I don't want to damn by faint praise.)

I keyword searched for something in this article that had to be in the other. Usually a name is good. "Abatte" is very unique.

I thought of "drunk Chicago cop", but figured I'd be up all night looking at the hits....

I think about this story and I think about the time there was an abusive drunk sitting at the bar at my Tues night hangout. He wasn't being physically threatening, yet, but he was getting very close to crossing that fine line.

The bar tender is a petite young lady, fairly attractive, and a first-rate bartender to boot. Her regulars, including myself and the group I go there with, are all very protective of her.

After about the first hour of this guy mouthing off to her, glaring at her, giving her the finger and making any number of obscene gestures behind her back, pretty much all of us at the bar were bristling and amped up three notches past "calm", ready to take this guy down if he crossed over into physical aggression. There wasn't jsut one small group of three or four of us either. Her softball team was there, plus a couple mechanics and a few assorted large statured guys.

I think the bartender got the drunk out of the bar more for his own protection than anything else in the end.

Barring the obvious answer "Why didn't you call 911 and report an abusive patron?" and dismissing it outgright anyway, knowing the propensity for the Apple Valley Schutzstaffel to look out for one another and not take into consideration that the law is the law, and not something subjective to a badge wearing thugs misconceptions and personal opinions...

What do you suppose the outcome would have been if twenty well-meaning patrons piled on this abusive punk in Chicago and pummelled him into submission? What if the same had happened if our own abusive drunk in Apple Valley got his own handed to him and he turned out to be a cop?

Something I think about from time to time...

Binky, now I'm curious which bar this was, because it's clearly in my backyard.

But to make you feel a little better, most of the cops hang out at Celts over in Rosemount. I'm in there fairly often....with a cop friend of mine, and I've seen groups of cops from Rosemount, Burnsville, Apple Valley, Lakeville, Eagan and Farmington hanging out in there all the time.

Even Chicago judges fear the POLICE. Imagine a lifetime of nit-picking tickets.
