Suspected drunk-driving Anoka deputy tased three times during arrest in Scott County

By Nick Ferraro

A belligerent Anoka County sheriff's sergeant was shocked three times by a stun gun before his arrest Saturday morning on suspicion of drunken driving, authorities said.

Lawrence J. Doheny, an 18-year-veteran of the sheriff's office, was charged Monday in Scott County District Court with obstructing a police officer with force, fleeing an officer on foot, third-degree driving while intoxicated (test refusal) and fourth-degree driving while intoxicated.

Doheny, 49, of Coon Rapids, was stopped along U.S. 169 in Jordan about 1:10 a.m. for driving onto the shoulder and over the centerline, according to a criminal complaint.

He stumbled as he walked from his pickup truck, refused to take a preliminary breath test at the scene and later declined to give a blood test at the Jordan police department, the complaint said.

He then told an officer he had too much to drink, according to the complaint, and stated, "You guys nailed me." He said he didn't want to refuse the tests and was taken to St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Shakopee for a blood draw.

Shortly after stepping out of the squad car, Doheny placed his hand on the officer's back, according to the complaint, grabbed his duty belt and said, "You really shouldn't test me."

Doheny then grabbed the belt "and began to move his hand on a hard tugging motion" toward the officer's firearm, the complaint said. After the officer stepped back, Doheny pushed him in the chest and began to run.

The officer shot Doheny with the stun gun, and he fell to the ground. He was shot twice more as he tried to get up. He was handcuffed after a Scott County Sheriff's officer arrived to assist. Doheny was placed on a stretcher and taken to the emergency room, where he "was very belligerent to the hospital staff," the complaint said.

Staff obtained a preliminary breath test from Doheny for medical purposes, but the results were not shared with police, the complaint said.

Doheny is on paid administration leave from the Anoka County sheriff's office pending the outcome of the investigation, Lt. Paul Sommer said.

Doheny was an Anoka deputy for 14 years before being promoted to a sergeant in the civil processing unit in 2006, Sommer said.

Doheny was released from jail Monday after posting bond. He is to appear in court Aug. 16. A message left at his home for comment was not returned.

Emphasis mine.

Yow. Whether the cop who stopped you is right or wrong -- and it sure looks like this one was right -- you do not win a physical confrontation by the side of the road with a guy with a badge, even if you are a guy with a badge.
