I believe that the GOCRA's Political Action Committee is going to endorse Rich Stanek for reelection as Hennepin County Sheriff, based largely (but not exclusively) on his department's execution of its responsibilities to issue carry permits as provided for by law.

Which is entirely proper; he's earned the endorsement.

I'll post the text here when it comes out.

I respectfully disagree -

1) He was a participant in the IACP anti-gun conference in 2003. That report, funded by the Joyce Foundation and listing his name, recommended, among other things: closing the "gun show loophole" mandating "trigger locks" and banning "assault weapons"

http://www.theiacp.org/LinkClick.aspx?f ... D&tabid=87

2) Past use of racial ephitets - previously highlighted on this forum - which sunk his career as the DPS Commisioner

http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpoints ... emarks.php

2a) A complete lack of interest in reciprocity for permits, as required by law, while DPS Commissioner

3) His previous endorsement of Guliani, who, as Mayor of NYC, consistently upheld the city's trampling of gun rights

Say it ain't so, GOCRA!

The GOCRA endorsement speaks, very specifically, to his performance as sheriff. If anybody in the community has complaints about his performance as sheriff, I'm certainly open to them, even though I don't speak for GOCRA.

(That said, I do have one: the permit fee levels. Working on it . . . )

Performance as Sheriff notwithstanding, I hold the opinion that past behavior is indicative of future behavior.

FWIW, he jumped on the Joyce/IACP anti-gun bandwagon while serving as Sheriff, and endorsed Guiliani while Sheriff.

Press conference at the so-called "peace sculpture" (while sheriff). I don't know the exact content, but the choice of location leads me to believe it wasn't in celebration of the Heller decision.

On a more personal note, at least from my point of view:

Why doesn't he wear his gun when appearing in public? I'm inclined to think he either 1) thinks he doesn't need it or 2) is afraid it might offend/scare people. These are not qualities I look for in a law enforcement officer.
