I called the Sheriff's office today and it turns out they mailed the permit out on day 29 but apparently the county's mail system isn't very efficient.

Funny, they mailed my permit to a house 1 block south of mine. When I called on day 32 to ask about it, they apologized and mailed it that afternoon. It was in my mailbox 18 hours later.

In an e-mail a few months ago you said that if there are specific issues or questions that I would like to discuss, please let you know and you will try and find the answers.

So I do have a question or issue about the issuing of a permit to carry by the Sheriff departments. Why is it that some Sheriff department take the full 30 days or even longer when issuing a Minnesota permit to carry, or even 14 to 30 for a permit to purchase when they have a 7 day time period. I am talking about counties like Goodhue, Hennepin, and even Dakota county taken around 40 days. I know one answer is because they can and do get away with it, but what is the childish point of it. In contrast we have counties like Blue Earth, Nicollet, Carver, Washington and a few more that I know of that are at or under 2 weeks to issue, which seems us to be business as usual.

Basically, I truly believe some of these counties do this because they want to make a point, although the only point that people are getting are that they are maybe on a power trip and/or being childish. I mean truly, what is the point in holding on to the permit until the last minute and then mailing them out. I cannot believe that their work load is thus, that the issuing of a permit takes that magic 30 day period. We do understand when one person in a county gets their permit in 10 day and another person from that same county may take 20 days, work load and maybe a more complete background check has to done on that individual. That is all perfectly understandable, but the magic 30 days to issue, or even longer, why?

So any true or factual insight to these policies would be appreciated.

In doing a little check…….The real bottom line is work load and number of other assignments that get thrown at these people. Some times it has to do with waiting for various checks to come back. The mental health human services check has been one of the major problem points for our counties. That again is simply a case of work overload at the state. We also see problems when Sheriffs have to re-submit the name because they have not received a response back, and then they finally get two response back from the state, all bit late….you can see that causes duplication of effort. So I don’t see the issue of “spite, or because we can”, I think it simply boils down to work load and being pulled away from one task to do something else, or covering for someone in the office due to staff illness or injury…….If you have a specific case, or name or something we could check further on some that have been delayed but for the most part……it has to do with work load and staffing…..Finally, I would also acknowledge that from time to time, there maybe a case that falls thru the cracks for some reason and the SO misses the due date deadline……...But hopefully that is not an everyday occurrence…….
