We are lucky up north of St. Paul - we live just north of the Washington Couty line into Chisago County and close to the St. Croix river. as our Sheriff is in favor of carry by law abiding people - I have talked to him a couple times about the subject. One would think that there would be very little crime out here in the country but that's where the dope grows and the crack houses hidden in the woods.

Maybe I'm confussing it with the first permit - I can't remember but I'll call and ask so my info is accurate. Our Sheriff Todd Rivard is a good guy so he would not charge more than he was supposed to.

Should have been about $25. Chisago is taking in three times what it costs to process the permit applications.
(f) The sheriff may charge a new application processing fee in an amount not to exceed the actual and reasonable direct cost of processing the application or $100, whichever is less. Of this amount, $10 must be submitted to the commissioner and deposited into the general fund. (1) no earlier than 90 days prior to the expiration date on the permit, the permit holder may renew the permit by submitting to the appropriate sheriff the application packet described in subdivision 3 and a renewal processing fee not to exceed the actual and reasonable direct cost of processing the application or $75, whichever is less.

I just blindly gave Chisago County my $75 yesterday . Has anyone ever tried getting a refund from your county? What is the typical reaction when their actual costs are exposed? Andrew, do you have a link to the budget you posted for Cisago County? I suppose I could find it on my own, but it seems you are more on the ball than I am.

To be frank, I really don't have much of a quibble about spending the extra money as long as they manage to process the permits and get them out in a timely manner, without the manufactured delays seen most often in Hennepin and Dakota Counties.
If my extra little contribution gets them a little more necessary items for their budget, so be it. Just do your job professionally, and I'll assume that you perform your other duties the same way, and won't misuse the extra cash.
Or am I completely wrong on this?

In my case I agree with you - Our county is rural and I know the Sheriff, Deputies and most of the staff. I know that they are under-funded compared to the big cities so I don't mind giving them a little extra.
Others may not agree but that's ok.

I think you are, but I love you anyway.
They are supposed to charge the actual costs, and they are specifically forbidden by law to spend the money on anything else.
I don't think we should need to bribe our servants to do their fucking jobs.
(Strong language to follow.)
