Obama’s Anti-Gun-Rights Homeland Security Pick - Janet Napolitano
Published by the LearnAboutGuns.com Author on Thursday, November 20th, 2008 at 5:41 pm

Janet Napolitano, who will head the Department of Homeland Security.

- Janet Napolitano’s anti gun rights history includes vetoing Arizona House Bill 2629 (HB2629), which would have allowed a law abiding citizen to defensively display a firearm when confronted by a criminal.

- Janet Napolitano also vetoed Arizona Senate Bill 1106 (SB1106), which would have made concealed carry permits valid for the lifetime of the holder.  This would have reduced the potential for governmental abuses of gun rights.

And to be fair...

Quote:
Q: What is your position on the second amendment?

A: The right to bear arms is enumerated in the Constitution, and is therefore fundamental to the liberty interests of all Americans. I believe elected officials have a duty to ensure that these interests are not abridged. My position on the 2nd Amendment is simple: existing laws related to firearms and their possession are a sufficient framework by which to ensure the safety of all Arizonans. Rather than focusing on new legislation, we must first be vigilant in our enforcement of the laws that are on the books. We must step up outreach and education efforts to ensure that gun safety is at the top the agenda, and work together to mitigate tragic accidents that result from unsupervised firearm use by children. Parents talking to their children about gun safety and practicing gun safety in front of them will accomplish this goal, new legislation will not.

She is also one who has asked the federal Gov't numerous times to tighten up the border, and to keep unwanteds out. He certainly could have picked far worse candidates for the job, but she's still not as strong as I would have liked.

A good day for AZ. She did veto several pro-gun laws that were passed but nothing too bad. AZ has no Lt. Governor, the next in line is a Republican woman who will take over when the current Governor leaves.

Silver lining, that.
PHOENIX (AP) - Janet Napolitano's nomination to head the Department of Homeland Security will put Secretary of State Jan Brewer in the governor's office - but not until late January.

The 51-year-old Napolitano - a Democrat - would be departing after six years as Arizona governor and midway through her second 4-year term. She previously served as Arizona attorney general and U.S. attorney for Arizona.

The 64-year-old Brewer is a veteran public officeholder, with more than two decades as a legislator, a Maricopa County supervisor and secretary of state. She is a Republican.

Under Arizona's constitution, the secretary of state assumes the governor's office if that office becomes vacant.

Only due to extreme public pressure. Because there are plenty of other examples where she did the exact opposite.

She's an open-borders supporter are heart who doesn't quite have the backbone to go against public pressure.
