Here is an interesting article on the Brady Campaign site:
"Law Enforcement and Communities Less Safe
Since Expiration of Assault Weapons Ban in 2004"
A Brady Center report entitled, Mass Produced Mayhem, highlights how the availability of assault weapons has changed the balance of power between law enforcement and criminals, endangering police and communities. Currently, there is no federal law that bans military-style assault weapons.
Recent deaths of police officers in Pittsburgh, PA and Oakland, CA make it clear that law enforcement is being outgunned by criminals with military-style assault weapons. Congress should act to keep military-style assault weapons with high capacity ammunition clip magazines off our streets
