NOTE: They do this in the Minnesota Legislature too. That's why we rate them on their ENTIRE record (as far back to votes when on city councils or county boards) and they must EARN their way out of any hole they put themselves in. Words [do you trust any politicians' word? If so, ask me about Sen. Steve Murphy) are worthless in politics. Only ACTIONS count.

Quote:
How do you outgun the NRA? Very, very carefully. Mark Pryor knows all
about that. The Democratic senator from pro-gun Arkansas was nowhere to
be seen on the Senate floor during Wednesday's showdown over a proposal,
championed by the National Rifle Association, that would have gutted
state gun-control laws across the nation. After a morning of angry
speeches, a vote was called at high noon. Toward the end of the vote,
Pryor entered the chamber through the back door, took a few steps
inside, flashed a thumbs-down to the clerk, and retreated as fast and
furtively as somebody dodging gunfire. Several minutes later, the
Democrats had racked up more than enough votes to block the proposal.
"Are there any senators in the chamber wishing to vote or wishing to
change their vote?" the presiding officer inquired. Pryor burst back in,
this time through a side door. "Mr. President!" he called out. "Mr.
President!" He stopped in the well to consult with Sen. Chuck Schumer
(D-N.Y.), a gun-control advocate who was keeping the whip sheet. Schumer
gave Pryor a nod, and the Arkansan - reassured that his vote was not
needed to defeat the proposal
- changed his vote to an "aye." ...

I blame the johns more than the whore. The folks in Arkansas don't have to keep sending guys like this back to the Senate.

Mark Pryor appears to be nothing more than a useful tool. Plenty of tools in Washington, and few statesman. :(

There are low life SOBs in every profession, but I really hate it when they are getting paid with our hard earned tax dollars pretending to represent us.

I think it's important to realize that the primary job of the majority whip is to perform exactly this sort of negotiation and to permit members from sensitive districts to vote for legislation their party opposes to the extent it doesn't result in actual passage. I do not doubt for a minute that there were other members from pro-gun districts who could have been persuaded to vote the party line if necessary, albeit with a comparative dearth of drama.

Closer to home, I have it on good authority that the (then) state representative, a republican, from the unfashionably liberal district where I reside, was given a pass by Sviggum to vote against the MCPPA since its passage was assured regardless and the reelection consequences for the aforementioned representative, dire.

Men and women of principle do not go far in politics.

True. As this piece illustrate so well.

Quote:
More on the Thune Amendment Vote: …Laudable though Thune’s goal of national concealed carry may be, however, understand that the entire exercise was nothing but a sham in which (surprise, surprise) the amendment failed by a vote of 58 – 39. So before gun rights supporters contact the 58 ever-so-brave US Senators (including 20 Democrats) to thank them for supporting the measure, all should understand that its failure was preordained by Democrat Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, and quite probably sanctioned by the NRA… Despite hand-wringing by The Washington Post that “Democrats Fear Defections on GOP Gun Proposal,” rest assured that Harry Reid almost certainly engineered every Democrat vote for or against the measure… And what does the NRA get? The appearance of accomplishing something – if not actual passage of the amendment, at least a recorded vote which purports to show who’s “fer ya” and “agin ya.” More action means more NRA members and more money…

Wasn't political arm twisting the reason Doyle's veto of CC in WI wasn't overridden :?:  It's an understatement to say that was a case of party over principle. :!:
