After finally getting my permit to purchase this week, I immediately went and purchased my first handgun. Having grown up in a non-hunting family, I was _extremely_ excited to own my first gun! The paperwork was all done and the sales-dude asked "anything else for you today?".

me: "yeah, I guess I need some ammo!".
salesman: "uhmmm...I'm all out of 9mm ammo"
me: "shoot...when will you have some more in?"
salesman: "possibly monday or tuesday...call ahead and check"
me: "Oh NOs!!! Obama!!! Oh NOs!" -- or something along those lines
salesman: "yeah, you've gotta love the Obama effect...good for business."

I visited a few other local establishments and was disappointed to find their shelves bare as well.

So seriously guys, as a new member of the gun community, I beg you to PLEASE stop hoarding all the ammo and leave a box for me. The safety of my wife and our unborn child depends on it! ;)

Dicks in Woodbury has plenty of 9, 40, 45, 223, 308, 762x39 and of course lots of shotgun ammo. In 9, they has UMC target rounds and Federal HST ammo. That is my good deed for the day :D

I also believe Sportsman's Warehouse had some also.
Also check Fleet Farm for ammo.

I've had the exact same issue as a "first gun owner" over the last few weeks. Bought the gun and discovered the dealer was rarely able to stock ammo. it took me three stops to find ammo before I could try it out.

I finally found Striechers regularly stocks law-enforcement calibers and has been reliable for picking up a box or two on short notice. A bit spendy.

Frontiersman is also pretty reliable but, on at least one occasion, they were out-of-stock. Also a bit spendy but slightly less than Striechers.

A colleague at work referred me to Sportsman's Guide that is evidently a national on-line retailer who coincidentally has their warehouse and retail outline in South St. Paul.

I confirmed they had what I wanted in stock on their web site and then went to the store and made an in-store catalogue order and carried it out with me so no shipping charge.

Web site is http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/browse/BrowseAmmoIndex.aspx?

It was a long drive for me so I bulk-bought 1,000 rounds for a few months. Don't worry all...they had significantly more in stock and I left some for the rest of the community. They routinely sell large-quantities.

The store is a big dingy but the price was close to the lowest I had seen. Not as low as Wally World has been promised to be but then again, my WM hasn't had 9mm in stock at any time I've dropped by. I've given up trying as I don't regularly shop there.

I've also seen variability in prices at different times for the same ammo with a steady upward trend in prices per box. I guess the market is pretty volatile at the moment. I see re-loading in my future but don't know if I know enough yet or shoot enough to make it worth the effort.

Good luck and good hunting...

As far as I know, Gander Mountain in Lakeville has not run out of any of the major calibers in either target or JHP configurations although they have run out of particular brands and volume packages.

As of this morning, Wal-Mart in Hudson, WI has no 9mm. Fleet Farm down the street has Blazer aluminum and American Eagle but are out of Blazer Brass.

Ah forgot to check Dicks...I'll go there shortly. Sportsman was out until Monday or Tuesday.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. This forum is awesome :)

And my wife still thinks I'm nuts for buying ammo a year ago.

I bought walyworld out of 9mm and .45 today in Apple Valley -- they only had 7 boxes.

Just doing my part to keep the shelves empty. I can't pass up $30 boxes of 100.

Wally world in Mankato is out of 9mm now. I bought the last 500 rounds that they had. $19.99 per 100 round box of WWB. They might get some more in March.

Sportsman's warehouse (woodbury) was out of almost all 9mm and most of everything else today. Went to wally world and they were all out too. I did get some Remington 9mm and 38 special at Gander Mountain. They still had 6 or 7 boxes of each left. Even after I bought way more then I needed

Good luck to you all :D

I was at Sportsmans Guide retail store yesterday and I heard them tell a customer that they are out of 9mm ammo and did not know when they would get any in.

My wonderful wife was in Menomonie yesterday and stopped by WM to check on ammo for me. She picked up 4 boxes of WWB 9mm. She left 2 on the shelf.
