BTW, no votes for M&P yet? Signs of scarcity or lack of interest I wonder? It may look like a staple gun, but the hole it makes is nice and purty. -Mark

If I could not vote for my favorite 1911 and had to go the tupperware route, I'd say Glock, then M&P last XD as stock triggers out of the box. Alot of folks will switch the M&P and Glock and it really is personal preference(they do feel very different) but most would agree that without a trigger job then the XD is the worst of the bunch. The XD becmae very popular as the un-Glock gun and until the M&P came out they were very very popular but since the M&P is available in a number of sizes XD sales have really dropped.
Now with a trigger job the XD can be great.

As a P7, Glock, and ex-XDm owner, I'd have to say that the P7 is the best, followed by the Glock, with the XD taking dead last. However, a decent 1911 would beat them all (the P7 not by much...but the P7 does have a longer reset).
The XDm's craptastic trigger is one of the reasons I got rid of mine...and it's supposedly an improvement over the XD's. My take in the XDm's trigger was: long take-up, mushy break, excessive overtravel, adequate reset.
If you do decide to get an XD, the Powder River and Springer trigger kits are supposed to be an improvement...but I have no direct experience with them.

My vote goes for the Springfield 1911A1. The XD's are very popular for good reason though. (Disclaimer: It should be understood that I'm Springfield and 1911 tainted )

Hey, I just became a senior member!- what no balloons, prizes? But I digress. Well, thank you (1911 tainted and others) for your experiences. I guess I'll have to crunch the numbers, pull some triggers, and see what I can come up with. Not to belabor the point, but any opinions on the best (non-custom) OOB 1911?

Springfield's are nice as are used Kimber's (makes them affordable), S&W 1911s are pretty dang spiffy and come in a couple sizes now. The external extractor on the Smiths are sacrilegious but they work so that's nice. Fusion sells a kit gun which I find interesting and though they really like 10mm I hear they chamber other calibers also. Congratulations on the ole senior membership thing too old man.

This has been an intersting discussion. Now I want to give you my 2 cents. This is a decision that only you can make, you know what feels good to you. You can't compare SAO triggers to DA triggers in SA mode and so forth. Can't compare a Kimber to Para....This is only my opinion but, the reality is it is your $$ going in the till so this is something you have to decide. You can go buy a gun that has a trigger a petite girl would be comfortable with and you may not be...You can also get one that Arnold Schwarzenegger would be happy with and you may not... It is your feel that will tell you what you like... I really like all the discussion that has been on this thread cuz I get to learn stuff from them too...And I do value the opinions and info that we get from them, and that info definitely helps me make my decisions but in the end it is my decision. Good Luck and I am sure you will be happy with whatever you decide.

Out of the box I like the M&P better then the XD, But after a home trigger on the M&P is much better but not as nice as the trigger job on the XD by Canyon Creek Neither compare to the trigger on a good 1911.

Having just sold my 1911 Commander in favor on an XD45 compact I have quite a different take on triggers. I like my XD triggers after firing Glocks, CZ's, Witnesses, various revolvers, various Rugers, my 1911, etc. Personally I have just gotten used to the long take-up and prefer that in a defensive handgun or even a defensive rifle, but that's just me. The short, light trigger of the 1911 gave me fits. I found myself shooting the round before I was set at the range. The longer trigger gives me just a split second to get my sight picture back and put the rounds back on target. I have owned 5 XD's over the years and never had a single failure with them of any kind. My CZ had teething issues as well as my Witness. The 1911 failed to go fully into battery twice (bought new) in 120 rounds through it at the range. My XD's aren't quite as accurate as my CZ or Witness, but I definitely trust my life to the XD's that they will go bang when they need too. I've rented an M&P in 9mm and found that it had more recoil than my CZ SP-01 in 9mm, my Witness Stock in 40S&W, and the XD9 Service I used to own. Don't like the Glock grip angle at all. The 1911 was just a tad wide for my hands in the wrong places also. I guess I don't focus on one aspect of a gun and determine that it isn't right for me, but focus more on the complete package. What I'm really trying to say is that the XD (although far from perfect) was the best candidate for what I was looking to do with it (carry it, shoot it, and trust my life to it). The best out of the box trigger in the world won't help you if you can't handle the recoil, or get the right grip on the gun, or carry it the way you want to, or manipulate the controls properly, etc....

Agreed with that last sentence, although I will say that 120 rounds through many 1911s is just barely into the break-in period. -Mark

I can see the allure of the 1911, just so happened that despite it's malfunctions it just wasn't the right weapon for me personally. The main reason for selling it had to do with the ergonomics of it. I can ride the thumb safety on Witness comfortably, but I just couldn't on the 1911. When I tried to, it would rub the web of my hand something fierce. Like I said, it was bigger in some critical areas that just didn't agree with my grip and that hampered my efforts to shoot it well. At that point, it probably would've become a safe queen. I'm a shooter, not a collector. A safe queen does me absolutely no good...
