Post subject:  Searching for new CCW

Hello,
I'm looking for a new pistol for daily carry, winter & summer. (all the time usage)

Must be a semi auto 9mm. (because I have so much ammo)
Must be DA/SA; preferably with a safety. (like 1911) I have not felt comfortable carrying my Glock with one in the chamber w/o a manual safety or hammer. (I know...I know)
Must be smaller (width and length) than a full size Glock.

My Glock 17 has proven it's a great pistol, but it is just too big for daily carry, no matter what holster I use..etc...etc...

I will be trading in the Gen II Glock 17 w/ 7 mags (2 33 rounders) and 5 holsters, extra Lone Wolf barrel and recoil spring.

Just looking for suggestions so I can go try one out.

I've been searching different pistols and checking out the local gun shops but I am looking for first hand user comments. (experience)

Thanks again for all the info.

Here is a couple. S&W 3913 or 6903 would be perfect carry guns. I have and 6946 (DAO). It has never failed me in 8k+ rounds.

Or the Kahr PM9.

My all time carry is a 5-shot revolver.

That said, my spring, fall, winter back-up carry is an HKP7-PSP. 8+1, squeeze cocker. It's thin, compact and safe to carry. Reasonably inexpensive as far as the HKP7 line goes.

If you're looking for more standard DA/SA I would look at an S&W 3913 or maybe a Sig P6 (although I think they're a little big).

cough cough P7 cough cough

Seriously. If you can get one at a good price, this is the safest pistol to carry chambered that I've ever seen. Accurate as a laser, reliable as the sunrise, and will fire +p+ like it's nothing.

Slim like a 1911, well-balanced...

Only catch is the cost of the gun (plan $700-$800 if in good shape) and the cost of mags. Bill's Robbinsdale has one in the used case for a halfway reasonable price, or did a few days ago, at least.

I love mine. Love. Deeply. Best gun I've ever owned.

I'll certainly put in a plug for the P7. About the only thing I don't like about it is that it doesn't pocket well. That's okay; I've got other things --

Macx has one of these and I think he really likes it. Maybe he'll chime in on his experience with it.

I have one of the new Taurus 709 slims in 9m/m, it fits in my pocket better than than a mod 85 .38 spcl 2" and it has a 3" plus barrel. No failures of any kind.

At the risk of saying "dog" when you ask me what kind of alarm system to get, if you're new to carry you should be aware that many people find the larger, external-hammer 9mms too large for daily carry. It depends on your style of dress, your body shape, and the level of concealment you want to achieve. Many people who carry prefer DA only, since SA isn't of much use for self-defense and can be a liability for a number of reasons.

No one has mentioned the Rohrbaugh 9mm, perhaps because it is DA only. It is expensive but people who have them, like them, and it is small enough to carry easily. Smaller, in fact, than any other 9mm. Also worth considering is the Keltec 9mm, which is a little larger but still quite small.

You may find the chart helpful.

Para makes some slick 1911SA and DA styles in carry size and 9mm. We looked at them real hard before my wife decided she like the Springfield EMP better(oh yea and the EMP was about twice the price). I have a full size Para and its a great gun, the push factor for the wife was the trigger. The EMP was fantastic out of the box, the Para would have needed some work to get it to that level.

Kahr PM9 now has a aft-mounted slide safety. Small, sub-compact, light. well made.

Sounds like you have described an HK USP Compact. I've enjoyed shooting them, though I've never owned one.

I'll also say that I've heard excellent reports on the P7 that others have mentioned from everyone I know who's owned one.
