Nowadays I carry a .357 revolver, but until recently I owned and carried nothing but full sized 1911s. It's not a problem with a good holster & belt. But a snubby is even less of a problem; I notice I do less pants-hitching-up when I get out of the car, for example.

I used to carry a 14+1 EAA 10mm which had enough foot-pounds in it to stop anything smaller than Godzilla, but they wouldn't make laser grips for that model so I got a 1911 so I could have lasergrips, and it was worth the change! :D

It looks like the 1911 is VERY popular as a carry gun.

Does a 1911 offer certain advantages over a DAO or a DA/SA in .45?

It fits my hand. I don't like double stack magazine handguns. The grip is too wide for my hand.

It hits where my hand points. Point shooting, 1911's hit where I look and my hand naturally points.

It's a 45 ACP. Enough said.

It has a manual safety. I shoot it in competition and for me the operation of the safety as the handgun comes into the firing positon is ingrained in me.

Normal carry gun, a 642 in a pocket holster. I have a 3 inch Springfield Micro and it does not work for me as a pocket carry gun. "Holster gun" (IWB) is a Kimber 1911, 4 inch barrel, officer's length grip, aluminum frame.

Your results may vary.

A good one has a single action trigger that breaks like a glass rod at exactly the same place and pressure every time.

The .45 round is part of it but it is much more the way it fits me and points that I like. If you are looking for a polymer gun look at the XD, I am finding that I like the way mine points and shoots.

As a newcomer I'm nervous about carrying a cocked gun. But I've been snooping around on this forum and have found some detailed information about the safety features on a modern 1911. I'm not quite so nervous now.

remember, it's cocked AND locked. That makes a huge difference. you also have the grip safety to consider.

compared to say a glock with a lighter trigger, the 1911 has more safety features. (Of course, it has fewer rounds ...)

you've got half cock, the safety, the grip safety, your finger not on the bang switch, and your brain ... see, a multi-layered approach :-)
