Hi,
I went and bought Gold Dot Personal Protection .38 ammo (Part #23720)for by S&W 642-- They of course also make .38 ammo. for Short Barrell use--

Balastics for both are:

GDHP Muzzle Velocity is 945 - Muzzle Energy is 248

GDHP-SB Muzzle Velocity is 860 - Muzzle Energy is 222

The differance is trajectory is only like 1/2 inch at 50 yards.

So is what is the big differance with the short barrel ammo.? Is it worth the price of me going out and getting a box of it?

I also have been using 158 grain wadcuttters for pratice as they are a joy to shoot over even .38 ball ammo. and a lot cheaper to buy-- With the 642 how often can I pratice with the +P rounds before I have to start to be concerned about wear and tear on my pistol etc.--

Thanks

My understanding is the SB load uses a powder that will give you less muzzle flash. It may also use a faster burning powder to try and compensate for the short burn time in the short tube.

I did a quick check and didnt find how the ballistic where rated on each round.
ie Was the round that clocked at 945fps shot out of a 2" snub or a six inch closed breech test barrel, If a test barrel was used I doubt you would achieve the same from a 2" revolver same goes for the SB round make sure your compareing apples to apples.

In looking into the post ballistics by the inch they show 38 GDHP 135gr but dont specify which one at 756fps out of a 2" barrel :o and that was a single shot barrel so no loss from cylinder gap.
