Here are a couple bullets I recovered after doing some plinking.
The bullet on the right is a Magtech 45ACP 230gr. FMC, the bullet on the left is my usual flavor of carry ammo, Winchester Supreme 45AUTO 230gr SXT.

These were recovered after they had passed through a stack of wood I was poking holes in. The wood consisted of a stackup of a hardwood 4x4, a pine 2x10, and a 1-3/4" thick laminated 2x10. (Used as an engineered header for a pole barn.)
The "Mushroom" shape does not quite match the picture on the box!

Yes, I have had similar experiences with other defense type handgun ammo in wood. As a comparison I was also shooting a Mosin Nagant with surplus FMJ and an Enfield with softpoint hunting bullets into the same stack of wood.
The MN penetrated 16 inches of various wood and made a wonderful spray of dirt in the backstop. The hunting rounds from the Enfield had completely expanded after the hardwood 4x4 and I found the lead globs in the laminate (third layer of wood) and the copper jacket in the pine board (second layer of wood.) The handgun had about the same penetration in wood as the rifle with hunting rounds, but the rifle destroyed the wood blowing large chunks in every direction.

I think the penetration would still do the job on Pinocchio

Ok. These last two posts confuse me. Am I or am I not prepared for the invasion of anthropomorphic dendromutants with a Mosin and a can of surplus FMJ?

Only if you have had Sorcerer Optimization and upgrade 2.5.............
A quick note: with the Obtain Familiar feat (Complete Arcane), any arcane spellcasting class, including PrCs (I believe) advances your familiar. May be of use....................
