 Changing company policy re: parking lots and private vehicle

Andrew doesn't always shy away from a fight...

...but he also chooses winnable battles, with an eye toward keeping a roof over the heads of -- and food in the mouths of -- his family.

That's pretty obnoxious, like the antis saying, "Why do you carry a gun? Are you paranoid?"

I'm not afraid of my bosses, but I also can't afford to ignore the fact that most people don't support, much less understand, gun rights, and many can't distinguish between "gun owner," "gun nut" and "mass murderer."

It's an individual decision, of course, and the person in the situation is usually best equipped, and always has the right, to make that decision.

If you are single and delivering pizzas, I could easily see either making the case for carry, or quietly breaking the rules for your own personal safety.

On the other hand, a married-with-children professional in a well-paying job in a struggling economy, working in a less-than-deadly profession like sitting in a locked office in the suburbs, might make a completely different decision.

I was flippant when I asked about the new job. What I could have said was, "Just make sure you are prepared to deal with the consequences of outing yourself, and not getting the answer you hope for."

My way was more fun. :)

I'm not worried about while I am at work, but I don't like being disarmed for the drive there and back home.

I got a reply back from the corporate VP/Counsel that he was reviewing the issue and would get back to me.

Plus, my badge still worked and I didn't get strip searched yet!

Is your company by chance a nuclear power plant? There is a Federal regulation that trumps state law regarding those. It's not going to result in any jail time, but you'd be looking at civil sanctions from the NRC and definitely lose your job.

The lawyer relents!

"Policy ***, Workplace Violence, states that workers may not have weapons in a personal vehicle while on Company property. The policy also contains the following language:


Applicability

This policy applies to all employees of *****. If, and to the extent that, any provision or section of this policy conflicts with federal, state, or local laws, the latter shall control.


Currently **** provides parking areas at <sites> for workers who carry or possess firearms in their vehicles. Those parking areas are on Company property outside the **** area. This arrangement complies with both federal law and state law."

So... I may have to use a specific parking lot, but I CAN keep my gun in my vehicle and not have to disarm on the way to and from work!! (Note- edits were made as the specific company and situation is not germane. There are some Federal laws that apply in areas but not including these parking areas designated. I'll work internally to ensure that this information is promulgated to those who need to know it.)
