Sechler Park in the city of Northfield, MN is posted. I was there fishing in the river in the park last weekend. I then noticed two Northfield Police squads head into the park. So I got corious about why they entered the park and I stopped fishing and walked up to watch. The cops went around looking around for a person and they were looking where I was fishing just minutes ago. So i looked down and my shirt was exposing my XD9 so I decided that they probably looking for me so I decided it was good time to leave. On the way out I noticed a sign that said, "Firearms are not welcome in the City of Northfield Parks." I left without incident and I drove past it again several minutes later and they were still there. I will be back down there this weekend and take a picture of the sign, I will also check if the city has a city ordance for carrying in a city park.

Time for a search around here, there's a letter template you can use to send the city attorney a letter politely telling them they are in violation of state law and it needs to be changed NOW.

Do anyone have or know where I can find a copy of a letter I can send to the city of Northfield??? I can only find ones for landlords. Also when one is obtained can we put it in the reference section so others can find it.

Change wording to suit this situation...just scroll up a few posts from the one it comes up on, you'll see Andrew's letter to Rochester re: their ordinance. Make the wording fit the sign issue (you may want to look at the city ordinances, BTW...who knows, it may be in there too), and you're good to go.

They have that sign at the entrances to other city-owned property as well.

The wording is a legal dodge. They aren't prohibiting them. They're just expressing the fact that, as a city, they tolerate but do not welcome firearms.

Ignore the signs and press on. Northfield is the most liberal town in Minnesota, and there's no point getting the locals all riled up over a sign they can't enforce anyway.

The point might be that leaving the signs alone allows Northfield to participate in the perpetuation of a community mindset that guns are bad.

The point might also be that as long as the city is allowed to keep the signs, they (the city) feel that they have accurately assessed/expressed the community's attitude.

Yet another point might be that I shouldn't have to deal with a LEO who thinks the signs are legally binding instructions for me to NOT carry on city property.

Still another point might be that the signs contribute to a possible "unease" or confusion among people who might consider getting a permit. "Hey honey, should I get a permit to carry a gun? Things are pretty crazy out there, and I'd like to be able to protect you and the kids if anything bad ever happened." "Gee Sweety, I know what you mean, but it's all just so confusing. Ya know you can't even carry in half the places in town here." "Really? I thought the state had preemption." "See for yourself. I saw a sign on the way to Billy's soccer game the other day. And they have one up at the old school where I went to get the boat license." "Wow. I guess you're right. Hey, you wanna go to Froggie Bottoms for burgers tonight?"

All I want to do with this is making sure that Northfield PD doesn't draw down on me for using their parks. I will check if there is a city ordance with it. If they put the sign and have no backing so they "feel safer" I let them be with their heads in the sand. I ussually conceal down there, yet sometimes guns get exposed.

It's a long haul to Northfield from Isanti/Cambridge area, otherwise the idea sounds good to me.

Seems to me the city made it known they didn't welcome guns in their community when the James/Younger gang came to visit some years back.

Anoka/Elk River for me. I'd say we organize a caravan, picking up/meeting folk along the way!

One thing to consider about Sechler Park, it completely lacks any "public" quality. The pavilion especially, but the entire park really, is off the beaten path. Heck, the road through the park is closed during winter months. Pretty much nobody will see a gathering of friendly, OC Americans.

No problem. I presume that Northfield has a more centrally-lcoated park? :)

Ames Park is in the belly of the beast. It's at the intersection of hwys 3 and 19. RIGHT at the intersection. Everyone driving by would see the group. I don't know if it can be reserved for gatherings. It's also right across the street - in plain view of and by - the police station. Anyone ever been to Jesse James Days? Ames Park is where the rides are set up.
